i thought it would be cool if people could share any secret weapons in their arsenal that help gives them there sound.
It could be a cool production technique, equipment, an unknown vst/vsti, rare synth... whatever you thinks interesting or unusual or is slept on.

to start things of i have 2 weapons the second one ive never heard anyone talk about i almost want to keep to myself

1st
recording a beat to a hi fi vcr and then recording the tape back into the soundcard for some rich warm tape sounds, even recording things like compressed shakers into a vcr gives it a cool sonic crunch

2nd
is a vst i use that simulates vinyl and old samplers and more, i haven't recorded beats to vcr for a while because to me this sounds even better!
the vst is called 'sonitex-stx-1260' it can be found here, for me its been the holy grail for lofi/tape/vinyl rawness:

http://www.toneprojects.com/products/pl ... -stx-1260/

ive been using this all over my newest beats last 4 or so, i hope someone else finds good use in these
anyone else wanna share?

Zing!, don't have to share if you don't want too, in the big scheme of things though the only people that'll see this will be the sp community not the whole beat making community, don't be scared guys.

Sonitex is dope, especially when you can dial in the parameters
VCR resampling kills sub bass, which can be cool if done intentionally.

yeah man tone projects needs alot more business going there way because they really nailed it with sonitex hopefully they keep bringing out more vsts.
i love the modern sibilant record preset with a bit of tweaking sounds so raw.
and making the vcr tape duck with the sub sounds so cool

1. Analog synthesizer, mines a dave smith instruments mopho keyboard. Yeah they are way pricier than digital synths... but NOTHING compares to true analog.
2. Every track i make i use pattern sequencer with compression on everything (sometimes i dont compress the bass notes), record that into audacity, bounce it back to the sp, apply lofi button and do other live fx (bpm looper, phaser, trem, etc.) Record that and thats my finished beat. That produces a nice lofi sound which i enjoy.
3. I have an app of my phone called "smart voice recorder" you can choose the quality and the highest setting is pretty damn clean, so as i go through my day i will record sounds, mostly percussion. Ive gotten huge kick drum sounds from banging my fist against big wood tables and shit. It just opens possibilities cuz i can sample any sound, anywhere i am.

My secret weapon is using isolator to split a single sample into 3 frequencies and resample them into 3 pads. Turns a boring 2 bar loop into full song easily.

Nuff said, no more secrets, shove a MPC1000 up your ass.

Don't know how secret this is, but putting your finger on a headphone jack, recording the sound, and using filters and pitch to make a dope ass bass.

I know most people get an SP to avoid computers, but if you haven't encountered this it is pretty cool freeware:

keep the volume at full blast then sample with a little bit of over drive then turn the samples down.

I use Audacity a lot for editing my samples.

I like to record a very simple drum loop (kick-hat-snare-kick-hat-snare...) on my sampler, put it into Audacity, then take another drum loop from a sample pack, mute or cut out the sounds I don't want (normally I'll only use the hats) and then slow it down to fit with my own loop. Then I pop the new loop back into the sampler and use whatever effects I want. Here's one I made yesterday using this technique: http://soundcloud.com/strangevice/the-b ... hich-dream
You can also keep the loops separated and use DJFX or whatever on the hats only for more glitchyness.

Another one: I open my drum loop and my main loops in audacity and fade the main loop up whenever there's a kick or a snare in the drum loop. Gives the breathing effect of compression, but more controlled and clear.
Here's an example: http://soundcloud.com/strangevice/not-low-on-your-smile
