Ill Greezy, did you sequence the MS at all for Swamp Water Plague or was most of it you playing the MS-1 live and 4-track magic?

For the sake of those that didn't read that thread.

Everything was sequence on the MS-1 but for those long samples and movie clips plus the vocal, I layered them with my Tascam. But only a max of 3 tracks were used for each song.

I want to make another MS-1 album, but now I have to unleash the dirtiness of the SP-606, stay tuned.

The SU-10 is really nice a long with the SP-202. An IDM producer in NY by the name of Wobbly put together sets using this same set up.

Both the SU-10 and the MS-1 give your sampled audio a quality of that similar to a cassette. A very unique texture which I really appreciate.

I saw Kid Koala live in Philly two weeks ago and the homie used six Yamaha SU-10's live on stage along with an Electro Harmonix loop box and recreated tracks from his 12 Bit Blues album.

I spoke to Kid Koala as he was chilling with RJD2 before the show about the SU-10 and he repeatedly told me how dope he thinks it is.

We also got to talking about the SP-1200 and the Studio 440 but that's besides the point.

I hope one of the moderators sees all the attention in this thread and decides to make a page for the MS-1 sampler. Without the MS-1 we wouldn't have the SP's. Plain and simple.

I had just cut a track with the SU-10 earlier in the week so to see Kid Koala with six of them on stage made me geek out quite a bit.

Man, all those old magic boxes cannot resample at all. The only thing intended at the time (mid 90s) as "resampling" was to reduce the bit rate of a sample (akai s20, akai remix16, ms-1and su-10)...maybe the first sampler that come to my memory that done resampling (as boss/roland sps) was the asr-10 by ensoniq (curiosly older than those indeed)...

Yeah, those older boxes have no re-sample features or capabilities what so ever. I used to use a cassette recorder along with the 202 in the early days so I could bounce my samples with fx back from cassette to the 202. That seemed to be the only way to get re-sampling done.

I’m thinking of just chaining cheap samplers as a chain gang, with the SP404 as the end of the line. For instance, I could begin with a sample on the S20, send it to the PO33, send that to the MS-1 downgraded, save that to a pad to the SP202, and send that to the 404. It would be a bit of a mess of power/audio cables, but the results might give it loads of warmth/grit.

I bought mine a year ago, and I need to use it more. It can downgrade your sample input and if you have another SP handy, you can further degrade that sample. Then do it again if you repatch your in’s/outs. Plus since the MS-1 has a mini jack for input, it’s perfect for a Korg Volca or pocket operator. What I haven’t tried is it’s sequencer, and not sure I really would expect much from it.

Also, since it has no FX, so what? Use your SPs or Korg Kaosspads for that. You just gotta use a bit of imagination with its limits.
