alright so i bought a 404og after owning an sx for bout 2 years. decided to state my observations on the 2 for anyone maybe considering buying one or the other.

basically my observations

1. SX definitely faster with the functions i.e when you delete a sample or exchange a sample pad with another pad on the SX its almost instant. with the OG it takes a few seconds for it to finish. If youve been using an OG and then switched to the SX i dont know how much of a difference it would seem like but for an SX user going to an OG its definitely noticeable how much slower it is.

2. When you turn knob 1 to trim a sample on the OG, it doesnt replay the sample from the beginning for every bit you turn the knob like on the SX. Because of this, trimming the beginning of a sample on the OG feels like its more precise. (still does it when trimming the end of a sample though on both sx and og)

3. Delay when applying effects to external source on OG? I could be mistaken here but i think there is in fact a slight delay here.

4. Brightness. Again i could just be mistaken here but like ive read in reviews it seems as though the SX does have a brighter sound to it. Whenever sampling stuff into the SX i would always want to filter or EQ the highs out a bit because i always felt as though it sounded sharp. on the OG i havnt really found myself needing to do this.

5. Vinyl Sim comp, MSX12 comp. Some people say that the MSX12 comp on the SX is "harsh". i think this could just be due to the brightness factor of the SX itself. but one thing i feel is different about MSX12comp on the OG is how the "ducking" effect sounds on it. it seems to me as though the OG you have more control over the release of the sample thats ducking out. I.E the release on the SX seems to be quicker even at its slowest setting. which IMO kind of makes the OG more ideal for that trick.

Vinyl sim comp is a sweet treat on the OG. The way one uses it would be similar to that of the MSX12 comp i guess. it doesnt have as strong of a compression effect on the samples but the ducking abilities are equally as powerful as the MSX comp. Due to the subtlety of the VScomp its also much easier to compress an entire track using it without worrying about snares, hats, or any other hi frequency sound coming into harsh like they might sound on the OG/SX MSX12 comp.

so i guess in conclusion after comparing both. if i had to recommend one or the other to someone i guess i would just say that if you dont care about the ability to apply subtle compression then get the SX. If you want more variation in your comp then i guess the OG is the way to go. In the end though i think both can pretty much do the same tricks. SX=faster OG=more compression options.

eye man, i think people get caught up in wanted the OG for the vinyl comp ,but speed is an advantage not to be overlooked on the SX

Agreed. Not fussed at all about the vinyl comp. I have a 303 if I really need it. MFX12 comp does all I need on the sx.

Personally I'm not a fan of the over compressed style. A little is ok but it's just getting silly!

the OG 404 is lightning fast compared to a 303.

pretty much my feelings too..

It should be noted there are 2 types of OG - one has the body of an SX, the other has the 'old' body.

The old body sticks up higher from the desk, and the knobs stick up higher too, also I believe the rubber keypad is made of softer material on the SX/new OG models

Mine is def the old og as i bought the year it came out. 96-97 right? Anyway it's still kicking and i'll probably just get another og when this breaks but other than vol pot it's still workin great.

alright heres something i didnt notice til recently.

for those who like the "DUCKING".

Now when people do that shit they turn the main background sample volume really low. with the drums regular volume.

On the SX. if you set the volume to lower than 30 with the compressor on you hear a lot of background white noise and static

On the OG you can set the volume to like 1 with the comp on and you dont get that noise like the sx gives you. Which again makes it better for "ducking fans"

BASICALLY

on OG if vol is set to 1 with the comp. its still almost as loud as it would be at 127.

on the SX when the volume is down to 1 with the comp on, the volume of th esample goes down but white noise and static gets louder.

Mfx 16 on the 0G can compress

Have you used the 404 for any other effects/mFX besides compression?

^^^

after 2 years i literally looked at my sp as i read that and was like Doh! i honestly think it has to do with it getting mixed up with some dnb shit called MSXfm.

as far as using effects ive played around with everything on the SX but since i got it, the main thing ive been playing around with on the 404og is the Comp.

bout to peep out the mFx :wink:16

if you're talking about the radio tuning you'll probably want to have all the knobs down all the way. it adds bass and a lo fi sound

noticed also that

MFX15 is different from SX

OG - MFX15

knob 3 - static/white noise
knob 2 - vinyl crackle
knob 3 - tone adjust on static/white noise

SX - MFX15

Knob 1 - white noise
knob 2 - vinyl pop/crackle
knob 3 - hum

What is cool about the HUM on the SX is that if you re-sample it and apply the Pitch effect to it you can get some cool synth sounds.
