Hi, I need to update my freshly bought (used) SP-555 from v1.3 to 1.4. The instruction say that I need MIDI interface to perform the update. Isn't the 555 a MIDI interface by itself? Do I need external one? If so, will the RME Fireface 800 (with firewire connection) do? Shall I use Fireface's own ASIO drivers? Or maybe using the PC's built in MIDI interface is ok too (although I don't know if my has one)?
Thanks!

Re: MIDI interface for update?
No: SP-555 + usb cable + computer + SMF sequencer.
There's a readme file with detailed instructions. Roland provides the SMF sequencer (win or osx version).
Follow the instructions and everything should work fine.

Re: MIDI interface for update?
Thanks, sharpmotif for a prompt reply! I thought so but here
http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=downloads&p=SP-555&id=1812766
they say "You will need a MIDI interface on your computer to use this program". So they confused me a little here and just liked to be 100% sure if I can use 555 as interface as well.

Re: MIDI interface for update?
Yeah, that's a little confusing - I remember thinking the same thing before checking the readme.
IIRC, after getting into the update prompt on your SP-555, all you have to do is open the SMF sequencer, select the SP-555's MIDI IN, open the MIDI file (update) and start the sequencer.
I think it takes like 5 or 10 minutes after that for the update to be complete.
While I haven't noticed any improvement over 1.03 (my CF cards always worked fine), I guess it's worth it just for the sake of having the latest OS version.
This link has instructions: http://www.roland.com/support/article/? ... =1812362#6 (I think it's either the same or better than the readme that comes with the zip file)

Re: MIDI interface for update?
All went well and my new Transcend 2GB 133X plays well too. Thanks again for all the info!
