The limited but working EXTERNAL SP606 sequencer

Post by korakios »

In simple words sp606 can sequence (within the impressive 16-note (B1 to D3) one-shot range!) other gear....
New lesson ,concentrate!
History: As we all noticed the sp606 doesn't transmit anything while playing. But messing around with V_LINK blue button I learned something(s) new
Step by Step:
Press the EXT and then the V-Link button:
We now see V-LINK...We will use the UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT cursors of SP-606...
With the Down Arrow we can select the "Pad Mode: PALETTE or CLIP".
In PALETTE Pad Mode: Pressing Left/Right cursor we choose "Ach"or"Bch" (A or B sections).By pressing one of the 16pads Sp606 transmits "Bank Select" midi message to our external synth
In CLIP Pad Mode 606 transmits "Program Change" messages.
In BOTH modes with the arrow UP cursor we select the "Cch" section" and we transmit oneshot key(pad) strikes.
Let's go to "SETUP" menu by pressing "F3"
We can choose the midi channel for the three (Ach,Bch,Cch) sections according where the external gear is set to receive...
Going down in the "Sequencer" tab we can select the PadBank which V_LINK will actually sequence.Let's say I want to use PadBank#20.I will set the "Cch Pad Bank"section to '20' in-order to sequence notes. But on the other sections A/Bch I will NOT choose the padbank 20 because V-Link will transmit Program Changes or Bank Select changes(remember the 10 lines above mentioning? )
Now let's get to the point.Eg
I want to write a Pattern on "Pad Bank" 20 on midi channel#1
Press BOTH "EXT"&"INT" buttons so they BOTH lit Red.
Press the V-LINK button (this is blue, dah).Press F3 select "1" on the "V_LINK Ctrl Cch" tab
Press the Record button and write some notes.
If all went well you should be able to hear your 606 sequencing your external gear

FAQ. Q.Can I choose different note range for sequencing?
A.Of coarse you can NOT!

Q.One limitation of 606 was I could not use midi channels above 8 (especially 10 witch is the default GM for drum machines)
A.Now you can!But I don't know if the B1,C2...C3 note range is enough...

Q.The sequencer does not write the note duration, zero sustain man!
A.One shot dude...we talked about it...For the record ,VLINK in the 606 is used for VJs ,and we got lucky on the Cch section, because they(their gear) respond also on midi notes.

Happy testing!

EDIT:
I had a chat with ellaguru and must mention that sp-606 has to be on latest firmware v1.11 to get the sequencer working.
