why doesn't the 606 have these functions withe nice lil buttons next to the pads like the other models??

to me one of the best things about chopping on 404/303 is that you do it by ear and don't get caught into chopping by the waveform's shape/peaks, you get much less obvious and sometimes totally unexpected chops this way, i.e. chopping last note of one measure then into the next etc

the screen chopping and autochopping is an unnecessary feature if you like to chop by ear using mark, for me the 606 would be the clear choice out of the line if it had this one lil intuitive feature carried over from the other models.

Its a quick process with the screen when u get used to it.. u get quick with zooming in and out of the wave form and moving the line around it becomes second nature and u dont really have to look at the screen while doin it, and its nice to see the peaks so u can make accurate chops.

thing is - on the the 606, i rarely set the end points because I use mute groups to cut off the sample. so without that... then ya the mark button would be pretty useful

Thx for chiming in fellas.

I have spent tons of time chopping on the 606, I just prefer the 404/303 method, it's def faster and anything that doesn't involve looking at a screen is a bonus for me...don't get me wrong I love the 606 it's the best of the sp line, but I wish they would have left mark and loop on there and a dedicated resample button so you can just breeze thru phrases and spread shit on the pads instead of using the screen

I'm reading up on this mute groups technique that Teewok discussed in another thread, that sounds real dope...so basically what you do is group the chops that you want playing at a given time? then just trigger one of the pads from the desired group at the time when you want the chops to come in ?

yeah.. basically pads that are in the same mute group will cut each other off (u get up to 8 different mute groups)

so most times I'll take really long sample on one pad (like a minute long). and what i do is set the start point on that, then duplicate it to the next pad... then i'll set a new start point and duplicate again to the next pad.. and so on.

because these sounds are cutting each other off, im not concerned about the length of the sample. and if i ever did need to cut it off I would make an empty pad and set it to the same mute group.

sorry this is slightly off topic but one thing i've found to be a pain in the ass is no pad swap function like the 303/404 [delete+cancel]. do you just have to use the clip board for this? kinda tedious compared to pad swap on 404...

Hell of a reboot there, crunch!

Yeah the copy button's the only way to move a sample across pads. The way I copy sounds across multiple banks is:
- open the pad utility (func+9)
- F1 for deleting pads
- then pad+clipboard to copy a sound for moving
- use dec/inc to go up & down banks

Even though there's a couple of button presses to reach this point it's easier to remember & pull off than a hadouken in Street Fighter. Plus the screen acts as a nice reference so you can see what's saved where.

The clipboard's also pretty quick when you use shorter samples. Same number of button presses as a 303/404 when you want to move a sample on the same pad bank (call me out if I'm wrong). That said, Teewok's bloody patient to go copying minute long samples across multiple pads without trimming them down to the useful bits first.
