just a quick tip i discovered today and thought i'd share:

chopping breaks into individual hits can be a pain for a few reasons: -polyphony if you have hats on top of kicks on top of snares you start running out of voices quickly
-there's no velocity sensitivity on the pads, so it takes some step changing in the velocity or lots of overdubbing to get your drums sounding natural when each of the same note has the same velocity

so... i like to chop breaks by quarter notes.. that way i have control of my snare and kick placement, but the actual high hat rhythm of the break keeps a natural sounding and fluid groove going.

problem is the wave editor can be a bitch to chop with like that, and the autochop won't divide your samples into equal divisions... but there's a way to do it easily...

just auto-chop your break with a resolution that you'd normally use to extract individual hits... before saving it hit adjust. now your first pad should be a kick. hit the second pad and hit delete. keep doing this until you hear the snare. go to the next pad, hit and delete until you hear the next kick. keep doing this until you've gotten all snares and kicks.

the best thing about this with the 505 is that you can then go and set each of those 1/4 note chops to phrase, and set its length to 1/4 note. now you can change tempo all you want and still keep them original and natural high hats tapping away.

not sure i fully understand the hats in this ^^.

are you saying yr looping a phrase of JUST hats, then doing yr trick for the snares and kicks?

or are you saying the hat sounds WITHIN the samples of kicks and snares can be placed nice'n'natural with yr trick?

sorry to be obtuse.... :?

that since you're chopping quarter notes (usually where the kick and snare fall) you'll still have the high-hats from the original sample rocking in time behind the kick and snare on each pad (as long as you're playing in time to those hats, which you should...)

its chopping 101... just thought i'd point out that chopping on the quarter note (or eighth or whatever for that matter, as long as autochop is finding those hits) can be done easily using the autochop.
