I'm sure most you guys have watched all this dudes videos a million times like i have, but figured I'd link this just in case.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW_zifBttXI

Always enjoying interviews with him and stuff, and watching him do ish in the studio.
Even mentions he started off on a 303 in this video, which i didn't know before

PEACE

Yeah Damu is the man. His dedication to his janky old 2000 is endearing and admirable.
One of my faves is the Madvillain Reflips-

Wow I've been following him for a while but I must say listening to that last beat, he has really grown. Haha I never knew he started on the 303 either. That's pretty cool. Isn't he friends with that Nick tha 1da guy though

I love Damus' shit.."how it should sound" is mad dope, but does get a little repetitive. He's ill on the drum set too. I've always seen him as a humble cat, but I don't know- when He's talking about his drum kits he sounds a little cocky. "If you want your shit to sound like mine--you gotta have THIS snare- that's MY snare! (layers 2 snares ,lol)...see this? Thats MY high hat..." it's like..it's a HIGH HAT. He talks about having a signature drum sound like Preem & Pete Rock while in the same breath saying he mainly samples breaks that he doesn't have to tweak at all. Far from what Pete & Preem do.

I dunno I think he's just teasing with all that "my" and "mine" stuff lol. It's like his own secret ingredient that you know, even if you follow the recipe, you won't be able to get that exact flavor. About the mixing, I mean I was thrown off that he doesn't use stuff that he needs to tweak, because to me that is really limiting, but if he really layers everything, it is kind of turning each sound into his own sound.

P.S. I am still in love with that beat at the end. It is like the most complex thing I have ever heard from him

Yea, that shit was dope- every beat's better with some vocal samples! But as far as his most complex- you gotta see this one video where he's combining all these classic samples into one beat, shit's crazy.Started with that suzanne vega do do doo doo ( shit that was sampled for "daddies little girl"-nikki d?)..sample on 16 levels, combined with the horns from "flava in ya ear"-and then just keeps progressing with all types of stuff. Don't know if he ever released it. But again- he started the vid by saying "Everybody wants to hear some real genius shit from me,so..."lol.. I was wanting to hear some more of that piano joint on this video too,see where it went after that first 2 bars.

I just checked it, I think it's the right one with the horns from Bucktown. It was nice, but I still think the one at the end of Drums Part 2 was way iller though, it has such a nice progression all the way up to the part when there are no drums but it just kind of surges... le sigh lol, it's perfection. My man doesn't like Damu except for "Last Ole" (which he still claims needs heavier drums  ) and even he kept asking me to go back to the Damu beat when I was trying to watch that Grap Luva showcase lol.

^^not to shift gears but dont you think some joints need heavy drums n some dont?

but i love his work and yeah it can be repetitive but thats limitations for you... i mean u ever notice how some of the dopest hip hop joints were just loops?

ATCQ "scenario" or even the "jazz' joint or electric relation which was a three bar loop.

Oh definitely some do, I just think that it was perfect already. He wanted to change it up into more of like a street banger, Ghostface type of track. Which would be cool as well but I think it was fine already,

Oh yea.. it was the bucktown horns, I had flava in ya ear on the brain after that damu video.Makes more sense, the flava horns is two notes,lol.@ Niq- yea man, I was just mentioning this the other day when a kid posted that if you're just looping something and putting it to drums, you should be doing something else. It's like-- what? Loops will always have their place in hip hop..hip hop wouldn't exist if it wasn't for cats looping some shit up. I wasn't saying his beats by themselves are reppetitive, but as a whole, he tends to use the same instruments and tempos in almost all his joints.

I notice his drum style to be similar in most of his tracks. I guess that is what he means by having you own sound though. They way he uses the ride cymbal thing and the way he likes to lead into the snares with kicks. But it fits anyway and it is cool that he found his own thing.

@ A.d yeah man i get what you're saying i think some ppl forget that part about hip hop and the reason it became what it was then(not now... lol its fucked) the joints where about ill loops and if u could take it in another direction then u would but the loop is the groove... i think hip hop progressed too fast after cats like the neptunes and swizz beats.

No doubt hes a sick producer, nice old school beats. But really, I dont see the point in trying to sell music which would have blown 15 years ago now. I mean you should never stop making it, I still play jazz which could come out the 50s, but people dont wanna buy that.

Actually the only rather new producer that comes to mind when you ask yourself who's "kept it real". He has kept that 90's golden era sound and added his unique touch to it. He's definitely one of the busiest producers and a dope emcee as well. All of his instrumentals are far more than beats, they're full tracks themselves with many small change-ups. I think he tries to make each beat as least boring as possible. He plays a big role in the underground scene of today, I wouldn't want to imagine it without him!

I'm so sad that I missed out on the limited edition, never to be repressed 7" More Supplies. I would have loved to hear what was on it. I'd buy it lol. Besides, when they write things like this on his website
Quote:
Again, thx to everyone for the support. I wish I didn't have to say it, but if you got your CD or get it in the next couple of days, PLEASE DO NOT post it on zshare, megaupload, rapidshare, sharebee, or anywhere else for free download. No password. Retail. Gotcha.

How can you not respect that and throw the man some change. I think he said this is not his full time thing, but as another beat maker and beat lover, I have to support him for really doing it for the love. We sit around and talk ish about commercial artists who are wack but are making mad money but then we don't support artists who are really just out there making quality ish and doing it for all of us.
