It failed because it would cripple the local drug economy. Prop 19 would let anybody grow a 5'x5' garden per residence. There's a lot of money selling pot and there's a lot money enforcing it at as well. Another thing to think about is if it was legalized a higher amount of the "harder" drugs would be smuggled into the US from Mexico due to the lack of demand of weed. If you want legal weed, just jump through the hoops to get a medical card (which California already has in place).

The only downside of it not passing is that we need to start somewhere as a nation to decriminalize weed. California would've been a good place to start the push.

In Oregon a similar measure failed to pass too. We also have medical marijuana here as well.

why would legal weed mean more other drugs coming in?

I dont really care that much about legalization myself..weed would probably be weaker, harder to get, and cost more under a government controlled regime. It would be nice if it happened one day, but I'd put money on things going to complete police-state before rational-socialism became the norm.

Also, here in australia we dont have the police-presence that you do in america.. I can walk down the street smoking a joint (and do all the time) simply because you hardly ever see a cop/cop car around, and most young people these days roll their own tobacco cigs so it just looks like that...

Also in my state it is 'legal' for everyone to grow one plant as long as you dont have scales/baggies/etc along with it (if the house gets investigated for some other reason and they do find it, you will get fined something like $50, but thats it)

Now I'm not gonna go smoking in a crowded place, but I wouldn't do that anyway if it was legal - nobody should have to be affected by second hand smoke, weed, ciggies, or otherwise

Yea I think it didn't pass because most people that smoke weed think voting won't make a difference. I'm not sayin all of them think that way. Also i think everyone focused on the negatives. either way if its legal or not its still going to be used. I don't think people realize how many people smoke weed. We could of benefit a lot form prop 19 and im sure it could of stopped a lot of the killings in Mexico also not to mention all the money we could of made to help California get out of this budget crisis. Their loss

the mehserle verdict that just came out is way more fuc*ed up than prop 19 not passing

Mehserle sentenced to the minimum term - 2 years

Protesters massing in Oakland as businesses close

how is "Mehserle's muscle memory took over in this moment of great danger and stress," an excuse for murder
