Why are there so many clones who play guitar? Totally unrelated to SPs...but I just had to get this out there. Maybe I just notice this working at a music store. Guitar has got to be the most played out instrument an aspiring musician can get their hands on. It's sound, everything about it has been tainted by rock n roll "culture".

I just wish I didnt have to go through the humiliation I feel for these "musicians" that I come across so often...maybe it's just me?

Hip Hop has people like that too...people who have been affected deeply by the "cultural" stigma of certain pigeon-holed genres. I call them Hip Hop preservationists. Why can't more musicians be artists and less like scenesters?

I guess what I am getting at is...why can't people be themselves? Is it that they lack imagination? Are most people hacks? Maybe the root of my question is actually an even bigger question...

Edit: hopefully joining a wesite that celebrates a certain line of merchandise is not a scenester thing to do....hmmm maybe not just yet?

Ahhhh!

we celebrate many types of merchandise but you should hear how unique alot of these guys are.
but i totally hear where your coming from. ive never liked guitar, especially acoustic guitar playin dudes that sing the same shit and everyone knows a fuckin sublime song. i met one dude that rocked out on a guitar really originally (yes, you can do that) and i freestyled over it all night with a bottle of jack takin it to the face. so it is possible to avoid scenestering but most dont.
whys everyone wearing baggy glittered jeans and big clothes, and tight pants and tshirts. the world is changing. AND IT SUCKS.

The solution is to learn Jazz guitar. Use to play jazz well but it takes constant practice, something I've set aside for electronic music...

THE FIRST PRO HIPSTER RANT IN THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!

I find it funny, if you google hipster, almost everything is a negative essay or rant about the culture. Honestly I think this is just insecure people who are jealous/haters/mad. Just don't concern yourself with clowns and be on your own shit. I just think a lot of people think american apparel looks good and agree with pitchfork album reviews. They are just on their own shit and a lot of people agree on their shit. If someone is a jerk with a bad attitude, it doesn't matter if they are a punk, skater, hiphop,Raver,Bluesman, popstar, they are just that. Just get it over with and everyone be a hipster already.

P.S no hate!

Oh p.s Sp''s are SO HIPSTER! It's like, man I'm better than all these "new" dudes who use computers etc. Oh ya who needs an MPC, they've only made about a bazillion hits, but I prefer my esoteric and limited equipment and buddy holly glasses.

End Rant,

Hahahaha funny shit guys!! I could care less about hipsters. I live in one of the most hipster populated places in the US (Portland, Oregon). Yes, they do suck, but bridge is right.... Get over it. We're all some style in one way or another and it just don't matter. Older you get the less you care.

@ Bridge where's my $150 MPC? Oh, that's right I have it and it's called an SP404 :P

LMAO. It was something I happened to notice about guitarists while I was at work. Every person who comes into the store that plays guitar plugs in right away and starts off the drills...hendrix, led zep, eric clapton...just anything you would know right away--but usually a terrible rendition.

The older you get does not mean the less you care about it!!! Old guys are always telling me about how things arent the way they used to be...which is usually a complaint about new trends.

Following trends makes you a scenester. But NOT following trends makes you a hipster? But "hipsters" are all following the trend of doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing--leading them into their own anti-trends/trends. You shouldnt live in spite of others...just be you! Ive been copied by friends my entire life...I know what trendy people do, say, act..it doesnt affect the way I am...I just have to laugh to myself about them.

Even though maybe 10% of what I see inspires me I am truly on my own. Fuck what you think about hipster, I aint one of those. Ive dodged being categorized my entire life...you can't just use a label for everybody, but you can label a lot. I can't even say that every person who is smart enough to be themselves is a "hipster". If you call every Artist a hipster then you are being close minded. You cant say everyone is a hipster for not being a scenester...thats contradicting! Some people don't know what either one is! There is not just black and white...I just wish the gray area was bigger than the others.

Even though I joined this site because I like SPs does not mean I am following trends. I was just kidding a bit about it has now become scenester, maybe it is for some. I bought my 303 with absolutely no knowledge of it or it's history. It was news to me after the fact that when I bought my 303 (with no preconception) that people started to tell me "you know Madlib used that machine to record the entire madvillian album?" not saying that Im ahead of Madlib, lol...but that I dont plan out what I am gonna do. I do random acts of Artistic expression... most often, I just look up around me and notice coincidences. Not to come off all high and mighty...but really now. Im just pointing out the blatently cloned people who identify themselves with social groups. Not hating, but really...why are there so many clones?

Ill continue to be me...but don't analyze me too closely, You might end up copying me--or developing a persona based on me. which happens to me by my friends.

Edit: I had to laugh at that first line about the first ever pro-hipster internet rant. Pro-hipster? wouldnt that be a scenester thing to say?

a fun topic to talk about...anyones thoughts are welcome. I realize that I just opened myself up for a bunch of flack. meh

h

Wait, is there a difference between a hipster and a scenester? All I'm saying is they are just doing their thing and don't care what others think. People that judge others based on appearance or musical taste are the ones the come of as judgemental and out of touch.

P.s Pitchfork favorite Panda Bear admits he bought the 303 because of madlib.

WTF is pitchfork? who is panda bear? lol

there is nothing wrong with taking a look around you and noticing that everyone acts the same, talks the same, and dresses the same as their buddies. Whats wrong with speaking out about this?

ya, you gotta keep your eyes open to the cycles the world is going through. if you say fuck it to everything, then you might as well say fuck it to yourself. as long as you understand that its different strokes for different folks and you dont go murdering hipsters on a rampage or some shit, feel about it how you feel about it. but still do what you do!!!

I feel ya. I am inspired by like 10% of what I see...but I don't let it consume me. At the end of the day I go to bed as myself. I learn something new everyday. But I wonder about others sometimes...what exactly makes people give up individuality?

I think what is wrong with speaking out about this is.......There's nothing wrong with what you are speaking out about. Of course friends dress the same and do the same things, that's why they are friends. But people can also be friends and have nothing in common and enjoy listening to their different perspectives and ideas.

hahahaha! it probably comes from me being overly defensive. As far back as I can remember, I never liked getting attention for my drawing skills. I was totally offended by people who admired my work and copied my work. Even though I should have been flattered...Im a bit resentful.

some one once told me, "you are who you surround yourself with." If you surround yourself with people who are not themselves then why surround yourself with anybody at all? dont get me wrong though, I do have some interesting friends. I don't hate people. But I just don't understand why so many people emulate eachother rather than spark something of their own. Maybe it's a blessing to not be like everyone else...and I should remain with my mouth shut. Im a lot much nicer when I don't speak my mind...the truth is not always something people want to hear. I want to add that Im not always negative.

In school, they should tell children to be themselves, NOT be anything they want to be.

on the topic of pitchfork... they review five albums a day five days a week. thats a lot of fucking music. usually they do it incredibly in depth and explain their scoring. im not sure where the stereotypes came from, i mean they just do a good job i think
ps most people do wut they want. if that involves acting or dressing like someone else, they are still making their own choice to do it. we are in quite liberal state in history... we have many problems around the world but i think its easier than ever for someone to just go 'do what i want'. i can go wank off in a bush while blasting sesame street out of a clock radio if i found the right spot. i can go down into the street and preach a completely made up gospel and people would just walk around me. but i wont
lol

I can agree with what youre sayin...we do have free will. But it does seem like a lot of people just want to know whats cool to be cool. But what I think is totally different from what is told to me, that's the difference. It doesnt make me a hipster! lol. I don't really identify with most popular stuff. But its mostly because I havent heard of it through a direct source, sometimes I just dont like it. The old popular stuff( classic rock) is pretty much common knowledge...you can't escape it. When people start to catch onto things I have heard of, usually months after I had been on it ...I had moved onto other stuff already hahaha. but not in a hipster-anti-new-shit way, I just normally have that flow it seems. My timing is just slightly ahead, and yet, in my own universe it seems.

jerking off into a bush while blasting sesame street tunes out of a clock radio? There's a guy who lives behind the store I work at that does that! ...kidding

Edit: hopefully I am not the only one who feels this way!!!
