macbook pro has an input that works. you might have to buy an interface. check m-audio usb interfaces out.

Hey man, I think you just needa go into sound in system preferences and change from microphone to audio input.. you might also needa change this in your software's preferences too.

No dice on changing the pref's in either mac or audacity. it simply wont let me change the recording input device away from mac internal mic...

i think before you can do this, you need to go into the system preferences > audio and midi section, and create a new 'aggregate device' with a line in, then later on in other programs you can select this aggregate device as the source.

I've bought a macbook (13") a few months ago and it took me a moment to find out, but mine doesn't have an analog line in (only digital), so I need to get an interface before i can record into garageband.
I also installed Soundflower, which is an app that allows you to route the sound from one application to another, in fact using this i am not sure you still need to do the other thing.

aggregate device is for combining inputs/outputs from multiple audio interfaces - eg if you have a USB interface + your built in one, you can combine them into an aggregate.. Then you can select the aggregate device in your software, and say use the headphone plug on your builtin soundcard for monitoring, but have the main signal go out of the USB interface.

Sounds like from what you said the new macbooks just dont have a regular line in at all

just the 13", the 15" and upwards do have them. In the thirteen, the optical line in is the same jack as the line/headphone out.

in any case, you do need to do something about routing the audio before you can use audacity to record from the soundcard. The audio is not immediately available to every app, like on a PC soundcard. I've just been trying various stuff suggested online, and eventually got it to work, but my knowledge of it is limited.

you definitely CAN record in the line in on a macbook into audacity or garageband. . .been doin it for months

click the apple in top left of your screen-system preferences-sound-then where it says use audio port for "sound output" change in to sound input.

then in garageband u just need to make a new real instrument trck and your good to go
