What does "greatest sample" mean? Most used, or best sounding? I really don't get these type of lists.

True, people read that type of stuff up though. 20 hottest stars, 100 greatest albums, people want to read lists and say how their list would be better, but at least they agree with that one part. I find it dumb unless it's like Dr.Dre's top 5 most influential albums sonically. Has to be a person I care about and something I want to know, not something totally subjective.

from reading this list i would say they ranked them on most used, records that have been sampled to the point of being iconic. they give a bit of information for each one as to why they chose it, haha no offense but lighten up

Still no reason to call it the greatest samples of all time.

Well, to me, its pretty clear what they meant, as it says

"....so we decided to call them up and get them to select their all-time favorite samples."

Not to mention, its not as if this is the first time anyone has put out a a "greatest" or "best of" list -

Kinda defeats the purpose of digging & searching out your own sounds... But its a good bit of history, that's all.

Would anyone else here rather read about different places that people get their samples from other than the usual old funk & soul records? At this point in hip hop's development why should we need to read up about what we've been hearing sampled for 20-30 years?

If this (& its related ilk) is what's valued for making hip hop & everything else is whack/untrue then we're looking at a bland future... Besides 'best' is a subject term of taste, who's to say these two have any authority to say what's good & what's not?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying forget the past (Henry Ford's 'history is bunk' is a wank), but the future is only as bright as we make it. Let's give credit to originality instead.

Forgive my skepticism, please.

yo i cant even believe i keep posting in this thread but it seems like ppls panties are in a serious bunch... this list is not called "50 greatest samples that you should use and if you dont you are an asshole" its about classic samples that have been used extensively and indentifying them probably more for people who DONT make beats than for. its just one little article, its not the end all be all of writing an article about samples, man o man... i thought it was neat, they took the time to link the og song and an example of it sampled - thanks to the og poster who put it up

I hate when my panties get all in a bunch, but seriously thanks for posting polyphonics. It doesn't really say anywhere, unless I missed it, that these are the greatest samples of all time- just a couple guys picking 'their favourite samples'. I agree, top or best of lists are always a little controversial, but just take it with a grain of salt and move on.

P.S, Computers this is e-beef.
