daedulus or however you spell uses one exclusively with Max/MSP, he was like the first person to get one of these things a back in the early 2000's, they only make a limited amount every year or something and they usually sell like hotcakes and leave a lot of people without one, i'm not totally sure how it works, if it is solely just a midi controller or if it is designed to be a MIDI controller and have different live control of patterns programmed in to it, cause in the monome demo video on youtube they show different ways to use it with controlling multiple sequence loops with eachother with the rows and columns relating to the pitch and speed of a loop, shit definitely looks like a serious piece of equipment, i am thinking more and more about getting one as i continue work in Max and see other people using it

I got the 64 piece a little while ago and then got rid of it when I realized it wasn't for me.

Don't get me wrong I think it's really great piece of gear, and the community is really helpful and supportive of each other but it wasn't for me and I think it might not be so great for people who love the sp's like me. It involves a lot of work on the computer side to make it work well, and it is always tied to the computer. The max applications work well with the unit because of the two way communication and I'm sure max for live will make it even better. The thing is that I had no interest in learning max so if you want to tweak something in an app, you kinda have to ask someone to do it for you. I probably use the sp303 most in my setup, even though the simplest software sampler blows it out of the water in terms of functionality. This is kinda the same with the monome for me. I bought it thinking the sky is the limit on what I could do with it, but in reality found that I really didn't have a way of getting to those destinations even though they were within the possibilities.

oh yeah and edison use mlr, which is probably the most popular app for the monome. Basically allows you to load in loops which then get beatmatched using varispeed and then split into (on a 8x8 monome) 8 equal segments represented by the buttons on a single row. Start the loop at any point in the loop by pressing the respective button, and it will continue to loop around. The button presses can then be input quantized to keep sync. There are many other features of the app but that is the raison d'etre
