Why are people trading in there 404's for the 404sx? I don't understand it.
400 bucks for 90% the same machine as the old 404. Maybe I don' get it.

the functions make it worth it for me... but i was able to get a good amount of money for my 404 and got my sx for a good price locally...

pattern copy in 2 seconds all day long... the quote un quote 10 percent of improvement made the work flow a lot better for my stuff...

theres still people using the 303 bitching about the load/save times but claim its way better than the 404...

i was able to get a slightly more powerful machine for around 75 bucks plus tax... to me it was worth it..

i dunno about people trading in old for new,

but looking at buying from scratch, there's a really small difference in price on ebay etc.. so I mean it depends, alot of people would be like 'eh, its only an extra $30 or whatever..

maybe its like the old black macbooks.. cost hundreds more but had exactly the same specs as the white ones hah.. people more interested in how it looks tahn how it goes

I had a few minutes to mess around with one the other day at sam ash and to me they seemed like the pads were more responsive than the 404 ones. am i trippin'? or has anyone else noticed this? also has anyone noticed that with the new linear sample engine if it sounds less "splashy" than the 404?

i never got along to well with my 404, but if these two issues are fixed I would trade up so it could play with my new 303(which i got along with instantly).

To my ears at least I think the 303 sounds a little warmer with less emphasis on the highs. While the 404 seems to push the highs out a bit more, kind of reminding me more of an older mp3 instead of a classic 8 or 12 bit sampler like the 303. I think glue bag/ master lo had a post about the 404 and death spike snares, I think this illustrates my feelings pretty well. Obviously you can make it sound not so much like that, because I hear people here achieving this. But to me it doesn't seem to come naturally with the 404. I was thinking since the 404sx doesn't use the compression from the 404 it might not gravitate towards death spike snares.

hey guys, i have a question about this new 404 upgrade. i read a few places that roland added a new swing function to the pattern sequencer, but no body elaborates on its quality/function or anything. has anyone here used it?

Tim mentions it here viewtopic.php?p=53200#p53200 but i'd love to hear a more detailed appraisal

Roland's swing on their grooveboxes has typically been good. does SP-555 have swing/shuffle? the 404SX swing is probably very similar if not identical
