that's about right with the economy the way it is

does it have 8 outs?

FX card?

card reader or floppy?

if so, you can sell those and recoup some money, either way I'd say go with the MP over the 555. Better sequencer (you can sequence the tracks on the MP, use the 303/404 whatever you have's own clock and solo out the tracks when it comes time to track out your songs. The 2000 is a beast, but the screen is proprietary and next to impossible to replace affordably...keep that in mind as well.

IIIII,
if you have the sp404 already go for the 2000xl...the blue one, if i remember well got a card reader installed, for 500usd is almost a present! if you do some fx miracle yet with the 404, adding the 2000xl it will give force to the sequencing thing, the autochop, the mixing tracks, the PITCH (real pitch!) etc i also think that it got almost the best pads in the mpc world.

but just one thing: the 2000xl does not resample. only this.
but, as i said, if you have yet the 404...

damn, 500usd is a crazy price...
try to see if is really in good condition: controll the pads status, that's important with the mpc, they're not very cheap indeed (the pads).
as Platypus Beird said: if it have the separate outs it would be better.

peace

funny responses, you both use the respective equipment you suggest ha. i should prob go with a 555 cus im used to the 404/roland structure. but id also like to experiment with a more 'classic' piece of equipment that has a different feel. i still dont really understand the mpc's sequencer. it seems to operate dif but im not clear on the specs. i still have to call the guy too, not much info is given on the post. but apparently he hardly used it, is sick of making music and just selling all his equipment. mpc's real pitch control is very nice addition, but that is new info that it does not resample  thats gota be a pain to work with...

have you heard IIIII's music?

thats exactly why i say 555. IIII with loop capture resampling could blow your gourd open

yea the mp can autochop, but i dont see how its that valuable to a psychedelic producer

effect memory...being able to save multiple delay times and switch between them instantaneously with the pitching of the time as well...

jeez i could go on for days

yea see? :D

effect memory, you save ANY effect with ANY settings to a pad 1-16 which you can hit back in time with music while holding down the effect memory button, with no glitches (except sometimes with the djfx)

you can have the chromatic pitch on c d e f g a b if you want

anything. isolated lo high mids......subsonic freq settings...anything

in this case buy an st-224, it can capture too...very cheap and grit.

no, seriously, the 2000xl, if you want a more powerful sequencer/pads/mixer/pitch/chop that's the machine. and a good warm sound. different from sps.

i don't have the 2000xl. the mpc1000is different from the 2000xl: more fx,usb,outputs,2midi in/outs,2 cursors (to control 2fx),RESAMPLE THE OUT( :D ) etc ...but the pads and the sound are maybe better on the 2000xl.
the big screens (the wave, IIIII, the graphic wave is there...) got almost the same dimension.

if IIIII was straight up hip hop i would say 2000XL 100 percent.

the sp555 is the only one that i haven't try (ok the 808 too).
saying that, i see it as a better and improved version of the sp404 (same screen, same editing, same fx control, same look) with some sp606 trick(sensitive pads+2fx+dbeam,ROLL etc) plus the loop capture.
if i had an sp404 i don't think i'd buy a 555. if i had a 555 i don't think i'd buy a 404 (except maybe if i'm searching for a battery powered sampler). maybe they have a similar sound too...
with the 2000xl you will:
-got a better sequencer
-editing better (i don't say faster, but better)
-apply real pitch (but you got also time stretch)
-mix tracks with internal mixer
-play/mute patterns with pads at the same time(...imagine 16 pads....)
-autochop in 2 up to 16 pieces a sample (not the sp505/606 autochop based on how the sample sounds, this is a real automatic chop: mathematic chop; the mpc 1000 got both ways, ehehe)
and other things...

the question is not "is the 2000xl better than the 555?"...
the question is: IIIII wants really change his workflow/method in something maybe a little bit complicated but more complete/powerful?

saying this, HD my sp505 is better than your 555 :D :D
cheers man

555 is much more than 404 with pattern copy

it's a tough call with your music, i kinda think it breaks down to efx vs sequencer. with the mpc you get essentially a 64 track sequencer and some sample editing options that the 555 doesn't have, but with the 555 you get the famous efx and dead simple resample/looping feature. The mpc is also great if you ever expand your studio with some synth or even sequencing your 404...dunno, it's a pickle. either way your end up with a dope ass macheen!

for me using both a 606 and an xl (blue) i can say that u have plus/ minus... u can do more with a xl as far as complex sequencing but the fx options on it DO NOT MATCH what roland provides... at that point it becomes a "work ethic" meaning it's all about what u want out of it... being that u already use a 404 u can do drums on the xl and samples on the 404... i paid 550 4 mines and i love it... although again it's a matter of work flow cuz some things just aint the same when it comes to using my 606... it is a toss up but if u used the mpc as a seq u can totally avoid a computer until it's time to record...
