still not sure why minidisc never caught on, it's a pretty cool format
lots of ways to modify them to get fun clicking sounds and such

MiniDisc are the betamax of my generation, while technically solid it wasn't given enough attention and didn't reach a reasonable consumer price point until it was already on it's way out.

You sound old  but I gues you have a very valid point. I still have my minidisc recorder lying around, gathering dust.

i had a minidisc boombox. the only stereo system i ever owned that had a screensaver (aquarium). i was dubbing to these a few years before i ever burned a cd. quite an underrated format, except for the tinny high frequecies, but who cares. how about that badass sony minidisc stereo mic?

i grabbed a portable MD Walkman when i was in Singapore...shit was brilliant. i used to record Real Audio clips i downloaded from the internet onto a MD, in mono so i could record twice as long. used to make the dopest 'mixtapes' by jacking audio from early hip-hop sites (anyone remember thareal.com?). i'd set-up a tracklist in Winamp with a 4 second silence.mp3 in between each file so the MD would set a new track.
plus that MD player was the first joint where i got that remote volume/track control on the earphone piece. helped me integrate the music cyborg like even more

i played that MD player into the ground, it died a few years later. by then mp3 players had taken over. Like pt3r says, i'd still be interested in one for field recording and such

I had a mz505 which i used to record live shows as a sound engineer...very tought device, i used to carry it also on vacations(hmm i am not sure about the spelling!) next to the sea and high tempratures!
Then i picked a rh-1(unfortunatelly i wasn't aware of the zoom H2) which is very nice...
The main reason they died was simple...before the hi-mds if you recorded your own staff you couldnot transer via usb to your computer...sony really "locked" the device...also a program used for converting your mp3s(no support either) and tranfer them to your md device was very heavy and it crashed often...
...also the "next-generation" md's did not support record of wav or mp3 directly and u needed the sony's crap program called sonicstage(real slow!)...
...but i will always like the quality and the sound(better than mp3 IMO)
and because they where expencive i really use them in extreme situations(the old one passed away!)and the charger of the newest died on a storm recordind(almost me too ,cause of a thunder!)

True DAT is good quality but... you better keep that machine serviced every so often or you might end up with a lot of masters that you can't play back any more.

I actually picked up an hi-md player/recorder along with the sony mic and 1 hi-md blank minidisc for 100$ and it's great for field recording and recording vinyl.
I'm very glad of my purchase

I've actually never used or listened to a minidisc, I wanted one so bad when they came out. I'm always on the look for new technology and gear but almost always am lacking the funds, so I just keep my eye on the stuff I know I'll always want and use despite fads and rabid gearlust.
