Nobody around me gets my feelings. My best friend laughed and told me: at last you got rid of this piece of crap.
For so many years (9-10) it was my partner that i mostly used for my beats and whatever. Making music in it was so interactive!
I got it by chance, looking for a cheap first sampler, some rock band had it new, used it only for a background noise loop in one song, and sold it to me for 180e. It had me breaking my head for so long, "how can i do this? and this?" and finding all the workarounds and tricks.
then i discovered this forum and lurked in here getting answers to long lasting questions and listening to sensei's pancakes and going like "whhhaaaaat thaaa?!" or everybody's banger microwaves.
Coped a st224 6 years ago (with no memory card, need to delete all preset samples all the time) under the guidance of you comrades. Its is an incredible machine too btw. Soooo filthy. But nothing beats the resample filth of the 404 imo and its workflow to microwave shit for fun...and the FX!
Just after i got the last machine, an analog Rytm, two days later! it dies!
Well its my fault actually coz i tried to repair its pads (with aluminum tape, which works btw....) but i forgot to put the metal thingy that keeps the two board separate, it got stuck under some papers on my desk, and so i turn on the sp and it pfffffs...... took it to specialist he said the whole board is short-circuited, looked for parts and they go for 200$ in USA. lol more than i payed for it new....

Just wanted to find a place to express all that, so i dont actually cry. Thanks people

Sorry to hear your 404 died, it's not nice losing a cherished peice of gear, and yours was obviously cherished.

Is it completely dead though? Does it power-up and just not work, or doesn't it power up at all? Reason I ask is because if it still powers up, maybe reflashing it with the firmware might bring it back to life cause I'm thinking the chip that holds the firmware would be the most susceptible to damage if you shorted it.

Would at least need to be able to power-up to try it though.

no it doesnt power up. the technitian i gave it said that he gave up on checking it all the way after seeing that the main board was dead, said not fixable with spares. he didnt take any money, i think he felt bad for me...
i accidentally let the two boards touch each other when i powered it up coz i forgot to put the "metal" thingy inside keeping them separate.it turned on for a sec then died. i feel like a total noob and idiot.

the other day was checking prices for a "new" one, and i'm totally disappointed on how expensive they got. its crazy! and the 303 is like 500euros.that little piece of gold crap! maybe should check on a 606, maybe are still cheaper. or maybe just go for the po33. must be super dope. it has a mic that sounds so nice... i was sampling even farts with my 404 and making bass with it(and the sub or octaver), anything really... hell i gave so much money for the rytm (it cant sample) and i'm like not so eager to make shit anymore. we got a word in greek for it... dont know it in eng

Sorry to hear it, bro, but pleased you found someone decent enough not to screw you over. The cheapest I've seen a brand new 404A for is £389 but that's in the UK with VAT included, so you should be able to get it at least 20% cheaper than that if you're in the USA.

It's a painful chunk'o'cash either way, and if I were you, I'd hang on just a bit, at least until the next NAMM, just in case they announce a replacement for the 404. No getting away from it, the 404 is long in the tooth now, and due to its popularity it's feasible they'll replace it sooner or later.

I think for strategic reasons, Roland might announce any 404 replacement at the next NAMM in order to potentially fight-off the upcoming Novation Circuit Rhythm sampler/groovebox thingummy. Important to remember that the upcoming novation unit is definitely homing in on 404 territory due to them equipping and specifying the fact that it will have the vinyl simulation effect. No doubt they have cottoned-on to the fact that it's one of the most, if not the most, attractive part of the 404 to beatmakers.
