The same way one NAS's album title "HipHop is dead" hit him once, he got shocked when he heard what was to him just another bad news : "MoWax is dead." The images of the pandemic, Bill WITHERS, MF DOOM and even Sean CONNERY crossed before his eyes and then the final one: the MoWax's logo. He then asked oblivious : "When did it happen ?", 2020 was really getting out of hand. His friend went on : "For how long you mean ?! It's been almost 20 years ! You've been living under a rock or what ?!". At that moment not only his mind but also his faith in the basic understanding he had of the fabric of space and time collapsed. His apnea silently ended on the phone. It was no small fit and somehow, in this tantric-like meditation, a little sentence still found its way to him: "it's not 1994 anymore". He attributed that criticism to COMMON speaking about the interpreter of "N.Y. State of Mind", NAS, for his difficulties to reinvent himself in the XXIst century. The author of "I Used to Love H.E.R." conceived it as healthy and constructive. Nevertheless our man had totally lost faith in his current space-time continuum especially concerning the machines surrounding him. He asked himself :"Why do they need him to know ?" while worrying for the turn the conversation just took and the tyranny it unveiled.

Mo Wax died cause Lavelle was a sell out and believed he was a Rock star.

How one man ruined his own record company.

Never sell your back catalogue to a big label is the moral of the story ..the wheels were well and truly coming off when James Lavelle sold Mo Wax to A&M .

A&M merged with Island Records and all the Mo’ Wax artists Lavelle had signed , automatically went with it – essentially leaving him with nothing .

James Lavelle also repeatedly attempted to continue UNKLE without Josh Davis AKA DJ Shadow.. .he honestly believed they could be the biggest act in the world ...guy was way off beam .

Running a record label wasn’t apparently enough for Lavelle. He wanted to be as much the star as the artists who recorded for him became – if not bigger.

The guy just craved the recognition and adulation, he formed UNKLE with DJ Shadow , it was supposed to be one of the most anticipated records in years – because everyone wanted to hear what on earth this could sound like.

Lavelle would be more likely found partying with Kate Moss or Oasis’ Gallagher brothers than in the back of the recording studio making an actual record.

It clearly upset Shadow who put a stamp on himself being the talent when he insisted on being credited as the songwriter instead of jointly 50/50 with Lavelle. The Psyence Fiction album was just bloated and egotistical –remember that Shadow quit after a TV appearance which saw Lavelle sat hitting 'notes' on a keyboard next to him.

And one of the best tracks released on Mo Wax ..hands down in my opinion.

thanks Danswift for sharing that insight into the Lavelle's management method : that man was a tyrant with personality cult and all ! Sometimes I wonder if it's not the sole reason to have your own label. Maybe the climax of it all will be Death Row and the death of Tupac. I still love that MoWax sound though especially DJ KRUSH on the Strictly Turntablized album with his track Kemuri https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o652uqbCEv0 (remixed version)
