Theres a bunch of cats doing instrumental albums out there these days, like Jel, Ayatollah, J Dilla, Madlib, Thes One of People Under The Stairs, MF Doom, RJD2, etc etc etc... What's some great instrumental albums you guys listen to a lot? Ayatollah isn't the most known producer out there but I think he does some great beats for the albums. He rocks a MPC 60II, a SP-303, I think a ASR-10 and other various equipment. I'm starting to feel these types of albums more than the traditional decent-to-dope MC over the production, because when theres no one over the music, it's like you can twist and turn the music in any way shape or form.. if that makes sense. Any way, I know Flying Lotus is someone people on here listen to, but i'm interested in hearing other's opinions about these type of albums. I know when I finally purchase my SP, i'm flooding the music section.

Off topic but, I think you guys should start collaborating, like someone does the main melody with the sample, and then someone fills in the drums and bass, or whatever you guys come up with since theres so much creativity in the minds of SP users it seems like. scream at me

If you are into instrumental stuff outside of the typical jazz and hip-hop that most hip-hop heads like... then check out Tortoise, Isotope 217, Tommy Guerrero, Fourtet, Ui, etc.

I've been listening to dilla - doughnuts a lot. track 13 is wild. "the name of the game is light works!". i got the thes one album but i'm really only feeling a couple tracks. "double your smiles when you're all alone, pick up the phone!". beat konducta in india will be out soon, i'm def coppin' that one. the beatjitsu album is good. play it on good speakers and give it a few listens.

if it doesn't have to be hip hop, look up bar kokhba sextet or some of john zorn's filmworks. god speed you black emperor! is great, any of their stuff. shalabi effect is good too. annnnnd, i've got a strange instrumental album up at http://www.rahorigins.org. not exactly beat heavy but hey, it's free. =)

Coldcut! Nobody puts old records to use as well as those guys! Not even Shadow...

Oh, and The Avalanches (Australian!) - they too can turn old vinyl into new instrumental madness 8)

i love that genre as well! to me rjd2's deadringer is prolly the best of them all!

i also can highly recommend "Dday One" (mv8800)... a bit loopish but still dope. last year i also was bumpin "Savath & Savalas" (prefuse73?) like shit...
you also might check alias / anticon...

if you don't have a sp yet let me tell you it's possible to work such track inside the box, but generally i would say it's way easier to have a mpc or sth. equal at your side (just my opinion).

such sequencing is mad annoying on the sp and i'm not willed anymore to put such amount of time into a track... still waiting for the og404-pattern editor...

My personal favorites. Some are classics that sparked the downtempo explosion in the early to late nineties and some are more recent albums that I think are exceptional.

DJ Cam- Mad Blunted Jazz
DJ Shadow- Endtroducing...
DJ Krush- Strictly Turnablized
Nightmares on Wax- Smoker's Delight
DJ Frane- Frane's Fantastic Boatride
Molasses- Madness (A Conversation With My Sanity)
Co Flow- Little Johnny From the Hospital
DJ Soulscape- Lovers
Climber- Downtown Loop
Nick Wiz- Hydra Beats Vol. 12
Odd Nosdam- Plan 9: Meat Your Hypnotist
The Prunes- Tracks from the Dark Side
DJ I-Cue- Twisted & Funky
Sonorous Star- Indian Motorcyles EP
DJ Yas- Light
