I would like to revive this idea of audio examples of each SP for comparison purposes. (old effort here and there were others but not accurate- viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5682&hilit=comparison)

It would be cool if we could figure out a way to use the same file and send it to diff folks and somehow create a way to sample it with each SP at the same volume etc. Like we could use a test tone at 0dB, a short dense piece of music, and a beat. Make them all at 0dB or whatever. Make sure when you play the files into the SP it is reading the same 0dB. Set the SP the same in terms of input/output gains and knob positions.

I have a 404SX, 505, and a 555 so I could do those 3, other folks could do the other SPs. The hard part is figuring out how to make the experiment controlled while using different people and gear. Seems tricky.

Anyway it would be a fun project for us- who is interested in brainstorming it further?

maybe try here,
this experiment may have been comprimised , from using lines instead of export, however it is pretty accurate for what he could do,

Hey thanks,

You mean this thread:http://sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11682
?

Nah, he had mixed stereo/mono examples and did not even provide the original sample as a control. I am thinking much more accurate.

yes, it's that link.

how could we improve the experiment?
I think maybe by importing the sample, resampling it, then exporting would be the most controlled environment, unless it is the converters we are testing, aswell. im a little confused, as multiple variables are involved.

Ahh, you make excellent points!

The project should def include import/export for each as well. no way to know if it uses the same internal path.
I think we would need control files- might even consider including some of these:
http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_hig ... naudio.php

The people testing should be able to accurately meter the input and output to keep the files at their original gain. All the files linked above for example are -3dB so we would want to make sure the sound going in and coming out was at -3dB.

There is the big issue of different setups to get the audio into the SP and back out. We dont all have the same mixers, interfaces, etc. I suppose we could get folks who are interested to list their options.

For example, I have Windows and Mac laptops avail with varying audio cards, I have a Tascam US-144 usb interface, Echo PCMCIA card i/o, Mackie 802i firewire mixer, RME Multiface, SP-555 which has USB i/o, Behringer USB302 mixer, Zoom H1 recorder/interface, maybe more.

I think running the SP straight into laptops/computer 1/8" inputs might be a good way to consider trying to avoid external gear adding color or EQ to the path. Also if people had Zoom H1 or other matching external recorder you could use that and get the files off there directly.

Lots to consider!
