To make sure my spelling was correct I typed in "sued for" on google and the first thing that came up was "sued for farting"
Anyhoo, I've compiled some tracks into an LP that I will put up on bandcamp sometime next week probably. I figure you have to be quite popular before attracting lawyers' attention to your tunes. Plus it will be a free download anyways.

Getting sued is more about how much money you're making/how popular your track is, not about who you sample. Every now and then, an original artist might come around randomly and spot his stuff in your music then ask you to remove the track, but tbh, I've never heard of that and have only seen original artist come around to get bloggers putting up out of print vinyl rips to stop distributing the music (even though it's been out of print for ages upon ages!).

So, if you get popular and start making tons of money, start clearing your samples. Until then, you should be okay.

As an example of what HS said: Since the Harlem Shake went berzerk on Youtube & scaled singles charts the two singers that were sampled in the track (Hector "El Father" Delgado & Jayson Musson) have gone to the song's producer, Baauer, for compensation of copyright infringement. It took the track 9 months since release (it was floating around for months before that as well) + one Youtube craze to get called out by who it sampled.

So as a single case argument, IP protection is largely income protection whenever there's a potential avenue for income. Basically: don't get famous!

Hector the Father lives in my neighborhood, he's fucked up for suing. Hip Hop always sampled other rapper's quotes and its all gravy. He got his own spot and he's looking for more money? Dude fell off when reggaeton died anyway.
