Use to be a member but sold my mpc(s) way back. Although I did ask a question a few months back which no one seemed to have the answer!?

Sp forum is where it's at! I reckon most of use here has played with an mpc or owned one anyway. Although I've never had the 500. Had a 1000 og and the pads went pad pretty quickly. They addressed the problem in the black mpc1000 tho

dude don't get a 500, you can get a loaded 1000 for as little as 500-600. the 500 involves insane menu dives due to tiny screen, takes forever to do things. you'll hate it as a sp-head. the 1000 and 2500 are dope, not as immediate as the sp but it does things an sp can't do and vice-versa.

+1

The OS on the 500 is crappy in my opinion... you have to do everything step by step. Battery power is frickin awesome but... A sampler with menus should at least have a damn screen. Playing live, you'd probably like to be able to navigate through your files quickly and load them between songs...
JJOS is the bomb. And the "whole" function makes it easy to apply settings to all pads at once, whereas on the 500 you'd have to do it pad by pad. Because of its size, and for the shitload it can do, I think the 1000 is the best MPC (I use a 2500). I'm not sure about the build quality because I don't have one. But a friend of mine has the black one and its lasted him forever.

Yeah dude, don't buy an mpc500.

Just get a mpc1000 and check out http://www.mpcstuff.com/mpc.html

You can easily upgrade/fix the pad sensors and switch the pads out to the thick/extra sensitive pads.

I thought it was well worth it to upgrade my mpc. Just feels a lot better.

Don't forget to install jjos, which is def worth it.

And for finger drumming, check this video out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9waaCMDuIE

I haven't used my mpc in awhile due to different things I'm trying out but it's something that I'll always keep.

Just out of curiousity: What exactly are you looking for in a MPC? Or is it only solid build quality and for live performance?

Maybe I could also be a little of help since I've owned a MPC1000 and switched to the 2KXL..

On a side note: I even want to switch to the 2K Classic, I'm like a time traveler when it comes to samplers, but that's not really the point just a fun fact..

i've had the 1000, 2k classic and 2kxl. My favourite was the 2kxl. an absolute beast. The jjos was nice on the 1000 tho

Owned OG1k with pad upgrade and JJOS. It was dope as fuck. Got rid of it cuz I have a 505 and 404 and two iPads. The mpc was over kill.

My buddy had a mpc500. It was pretty shitty to use coming from the 1k. Navigation sucks and the pads were hard as hell. He upgraded to the fat pads and that helped in that area, but it was still slow to use.

My two other buddies have 2500s. The build quality on the 2500 is way better than the 1k or 500. 1k had better build quality compared to the 500.

I'd suggest maybe looking into getting an ipad with beatmaker2 and some synth apps.

I'd get another mpc IF I didn't have SPs or an ipad. Otherwise it's overkill.

Yeah MPC forums are def not fam-quality. Can be a bunch of cunts, but as with the internet in general "lurk moar" will pay off. Don't argue with the trolls, if you do they've already won. Thick skin's needed over there. There are a few dope members but they're all drowned out by douchebags like Lampdog. He's the anti-Ellaguru.

The battles are worth jumping on, they're open to all gear- hardware and software. Plus the competition can be fierce, it's a great way to up your game.

But as an SP-606 & MPC-500 owner I can def say stick wit SP. Tried hard as I could to like the 500 but can't find any love for it.
- Fuck all memory
- Loading & saving projects sucks (biggest killer, fucking demotivating to not have all samples & sequences ready from start-up, the 606 & ESX spoiled me there)
- Effects are OK but not as varied as an SP's
- No JJOS compatibility

To be honest I found the menu diving OK, if a little slow. Menus were laid out logically & using them was always clear. A bigger & better screen would've helped a bunch though. Everything I started on the 500 ended up with the samples exported to other gear so I could finish the track.

Seems like every SP's workflow is quicker than the MPCs & they get the user thinking more creatively. The 500's build quality is fine, never had any issues with it. To be honest I prefer the 500's pads to the 606's (bigger, better for finger drumming). Other things like the voice count & huge sequencer are nice but the flaws just kill it for me.

The MPC-500 was an interesting failure, if you need an MPC you don't need a 500.

*EDIT*

Ha! Sorry mate, gonna hoard my 6s, they're seriously underrated samplers.

Hahaha, nice one.

I've been lurking on the MPC-forums lately aswell and MPC-Tutor is a great guy though. As for Stones Throw forums, I think it's alright.. At the battle section though, not really checking it out anymore.. Also lurked at futureproducers which is also okay, nothing special and a LARGE community.

As for SP-forums, it's community isn't that big and everyone is very helpful and gets along very well, makes me wanna check it out everyday.

Oh well, we all probably knew that. About MPC's - already made a decision yet, Stray? :p

I'm now going to join the Stones Throw board and alternate daily between there and mpc forums asking "how do I turn my mpc on?" and "can I sample into my mpc?" style questions, that should upset the trolls.
 Genius! Loads of potential right there, bet you can't get banned in 3 or less posts.
