Whats up Ella, you mean turning audio tracks into MIDI notes right? Like if you recorded some drums on tape and now you want to turn it into MIDI data from the single hits. If the samples were chopped from the same program that made the sequence, it might be possible. I remember I did this on the MV, seem to forgot how though. But I had the drum samples chopped on to the pads, and recorded an audio track then I changed the pad data into MIDI tracks. It was a method. At another forum, this was discussed and someone mentioned some freeware that can do it. I'll try to contact that member to see if he remembers.

Hi ILL!!
thanks man, this is for a piece of theatre, so a man commissioned me an existing track but he just want to change the original instrument with another one.

i have come across some programs that do this, with varying results, my software testing days are from a long time ago, so i dont mess with anything or remember what i played with, but just google search for audio to midi,

i found stuff like this http://www.musica.at/audio2midi/
i dont recomend this product because i never tryed it but there is a good read.about
the math behind it is very interesting.

look around you will find one, maybe one for free.

Is your audio track a single instrument or is it a full composition. From what I've read about audio to midi even the expensive software still doesn't work great. If your audio track is a single instrument you will have better luck, but I would still not expect it to come out perfect. Look on YouTube, I've also seen some tutorials for converting audio to midi.

An analogy I've read is that it's about as easy to exact all the individual ingredients in a slice of bread as it is to properly convert complex audio to midi.

maybe ellaguru is talking about audio integrated with midi, is the track you want to change already mixed into a final audio file, or do you have the audio tracks seperated, is it already a midi instrument you want to change ? if so then just change the instrument in your ableton.

Yo Ella, ever heard of Melodyne? It seems to do what you're asking. Load a wav into it & it'll tell you what notes are used in the recording. From what I understand, you can re-pitch things & convert to midi notes so you can transport a riff to Ableton & play it back with a VST synth. A mate of mine's done some pretty lazy covers with Melodyne & Logic.

Download a trial version here:

Only catch is its REALLY expensive if you want a legit version.

Thanks guys for your advices.
Yes i've heard of melodyne. I think it exists also as vst. Maybe it could do the trick.
I'm gonna try it.
Thanks again.

The brand new Ableton Live 9 will do that for you...

I don't think 8 can (at least I've never seen it). It's a new feature in Live 9.

8 can slice drum beats into midi tracks, so can 7, but turning pitch-> notes is a different kettle of fish
