ive been working on two albums lately, one that i care about much (the SP World follow-up, SP Balboa, and one that i care about not so much (mostly self-produced, soon-to-be-released, Flow State)
the main reason i don't care much, or maybe just don't know how to feel about the flow state album is because i'm too obsessed with the balboa one. so of course, in those balboa songs there's a few lines that i now obsessively dislike or disagree with. i often contradict myself and i think thats an inescapable part of writing creatively. it would be insane to feel a need to always agree with my lyrics. like Eyedea said "its just documentation of momentary thought, nothing set in stone just because its sold and bought".. mine are hardly "sold and bought" but you get the point.
i thought about rewriting and rerecording those parts, as i have in the past. but i just had the epiphany (one that i've surely already had and forgotten (a repeaphany? (parenthesis within parenthesis within parenthesis??))) .. the epiphany that instead of rerecording the songs, which seems to rob them of something special... some magic.. yes.. i'm Michael Jackson.. sorry, i had to say that since it kinda rhymed and i'm impulsive and compulsive and repulsive and convulsive.
i digress. again.
the epiphany was that instead of rerecording unwanted lines, correct them later in the album. or at least try to justify them.

if you've had any recent epiphanies or SP-phanies please share!

referencing earlier rhymes on the album will be be cool for the listener, too, sorta like an in joke between you both. plus you'll connect songs to other songs, making a more interesting whole.

a realization that i've made recently is that i've been more productive on the samplers and in bands since having a baby than I was before. i have waaaay less time, but i make it count more, i guess.

Yes! Thank you.. i thought the same thing but forgot to mention it. you are absolutely right. With a story-album of course you have to tie tracks together but with the train-of-thought type of verses i usually write i think its cool to have those story type revelations in the form of realizations and evolution of thought.

Congrats for your baby! i bet you are also more productive because of the inspiration from him or her. i can only imagine!

I had a recent epiphany that some tracks sound weak alone but sound very strong in an album setting...and vice versa...even lengths of tracks, even if they're the same loops and all that shit, should be built different based on intention...

That's all I got for now.

no doubt. this is relevant in two ways with my Flow State album..
A) part of the reason i don't care much is that the album doesn't seem cohesive (at least to me right now) since its just a collection of recently written songs split up by old beat mixes. No real direction.. i guess that makes the last line "its going nowhere" relevant, but still, i'm an album guy. I like an album with a vision behind it.. but i also like creating without direction so i guess it makes sense for me to make both types of albums.. maybe in the future i'll keep the less focused ones to myself.. maybe pick their best moments later for a more cohesive work.

and the second reason its relevant is that the old beat mixes are not strong but i think that they strengthen the vocal tracks since those have newer beats.

here's another little revelation for yous

i started working on videos for the SP Balboa project and it seems completely new to think as some kind of video director. i've made a few videos including this skate video from high school.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcSooqxgB7w
dude at 41 seconds in is the homie Sakman, the cat that put me onto this site. I just recorded a little video of his dog greeting me a few days ago. here's that one .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2715nPfCOP8
clearly an amateur with the camera.
so when i shot a single scene for a balboa video, it felt shockingly new to think like a director and an actor.. i wanted to start it with a shot of me waking up so i had to pretend to wake up.. it was strange but kinda fun. its very surreal to put yourself out there in this modern age. we're still at the birth of this thing
