For me it is mostly people here on the sp-forum. We all do it for fun, not $$$.

In rhyming - Rakim, he made the voice an instrument. I learned that tone is very important, Eric B is President is a good example, listen to that voice. Nas, this dude broke my head to write better. When I heard Live at the BBQ by Main Source, I was blown away by his verse and this was back in 1990, no one rhymed like that then.

Beats - Mr Walt and Evil Dee, when they did Enta Da Stage, they taught me that less is better and still sound grimey. Pete Rock inspired me to look for ravishing melodies and loops. Jam Master Jay made beat making an art. He took all methods of recording and used it at his disposal with a DJ's perception, the Sgt. Pepper of Hip Hop.
