PEOPLE BITCHING ABOUT AUTOCHOP FEATURES.

It's not much of an advantage unless you're just a complete lazy ass. It's the same damn thing as chopping by ear but more accurate, and visual. It's not much of an advantage. It still takes a decent producer to adjust the length of each zone according to his or her style. If you're going to bitch about an efficient feature just because you don't have it, bitch about the mute group/assign feature on mpc's. But, yeah, producers should still respect other producer's methods of production. In the long run, it's all about the music and the final product, not the equipment, the equipment's features, or how it was produced.

Over-emphasis on the visual side of beatmaking is always detrimental to the soul of the finished product. Ideally, you would know your machine so thoroughly that you could close your eyes and create the entire beat by ear alone. I think chopping visually is a bad idea personally.

The nice thing about autochop is the happy accidents that you can end up with... and fast break chopping, but it's not that much quicker than the mark button when you're in good practice.

A lot of cats who are just starting out, or transitioning from software won't even mess with a machine until they know it has autochop. Weak!

Auto-Chop is great when you're beat-blocked and find new sounds to work with. But when you know what you want, its useless, unless its a 505 or MV where you can shift the points.

I really enjoy chopping by numbers rather than waveform. When samplers started having waveforms, I thought it was interesting and cool but then I realized the chops weren't as natural when I chop with numbers and ear. I can look at a waveform and think I place the point right but it won't sound good. Ears is the best tool and been the best since the beginning of time.

Ill & Ape are on the money. The best results come from balancing techniques (not just relevent to autochop).

Who's been whining about no autochop? Must've missed that thread, I wasn't sure anyone cared about it anymore.

I don't do it much more on my 505 because I usually know how I want to chop (different notes and sounds) but it definitely helped when I first got it and you do get some cool interesting sounds when you do it. A lot of the time you get weird sounding stuff though.

Can't knock on other people's methods but, for me, autochop and waveform display are pretty much useless. Having a visual like that really takes me out of the music, it becomes more about putting different bits together than making a cohesive whole. That's why moving to the 404 from Ableton was such a revelation; it felt like an instrument.
