Oh, that's just my weed stash. I still gotta buy a bunch of shit, hence the 25 cd cover as an ashtray and the cheap wooden weed pipe.

Yo springwater how do you like that Tascam? My bro is moving to China in a couple weeks and says I can have his free of charge. Thing is it's kinda big so I don't want it unless it's dope.

The tascan 2488 neo is great. Just copped it this past weekend when the price dropped 200 bucks at guitar center. I had a tascam dp 02 cf and its sort of the same with the ease of recording but you can see a waveform which makes editing much easier, setting up in and out points with a visual wave then doing copy and paste to paste loops. I mastered this machine and all of its functions in a day with the manual. Have it hooked up midi to the MV so i can track everything out to the tascam for further eqing and editing. I can even rock out on the fly with the metronome and lay out everything track by track easy as fuck. None of that routing crap like the roland VS boxes or some yamaha boxes. Select the channel you want to record on and select the input, hit record and boom! Even has a multiband compression for mastering which is pretty dam good. I make a track, master it, send it to my computer through the usb, then put it on my ipod. I forced myself to go through the steps so i could move on knowing everything and say fuck the manual. Before there was always something getting in the way of me making beats, whether it be eqing or tracking out(which i love to do, im a control freak or at least "thats what she said") so this thing is a nice machine for a easy workflow. Why would you even say no to any machine free of charge. Someone could give me a free horse and id take it with or without a stable, ride the shit out of that horse.
Hope this helps.

@springwater
spring, it seems the digital recorder i would like to see from years.
i had a DP01fx and i liked it, but ,as i noticed for the 95% of digital recorders, it cannot let you recorder in ping-pong method without also recording every tracks you were just listen to (in other words it records also the non armed track). i have bought it 'cause of its cool feature (too) to accept external fx.
now i downloaded the 2488neo manual and i see on the front pannel the dedicated out for master/monitor and for stereo, separeted...this means that what i'm searching for is possible with this machine, right? could you confirm that? also, i see the effect sends on the rear pannel but not the aux, this means that the machine don't accept external fx?
thanx!

with the effects, you can send the signal out and your return would just go to an input. I have the aux send going to my sp 808 then i have the master out of my 808 go back to an input. So i can rock out on the 808 and have it set up to an input, or use it as an external efects processor. As for the recording the non armed tracks, i havent had that happen. Totally had it happen on my DP 02. I remember having to take some time to figure out why it was recording the tracks i had already recorded, sort of like it was bouncing my previous tracks. I havent had this happene with this machine yet. Didnt even think about it. Just started arming tracks and banging em out. Kinda sucks that the MV doesnt have multiple outs unless you buy that fucking expansion that they dont sell anymore and is like 300 bucks on ebay. Who sells 6 output expansion for 300 fucking bucks. Fucking dum. Be nice to have a mpc 1000 right now. could track out easy as fuck. but its nice that the midi clock starts my tracks on point. Its a great machine, i dug through the manual before i bought it as well and i knew i wanted it once i saw they had midi, waveform view, and the aux sends. The effects on the 808 are so nice and it has that warm sound. So down the line, i will probably record all my tracks to the tascam, then send it all out to the 808 with the vinyl sim-like effect and track it back then eq. Makes drums sound raw and gives it alot of character.

Thanks. definitely sounds like it would be worth having. I'm on a Korg D888 now but before then I was deep in ADAT Land, 8 tracks isn't nearly enough. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't complete garbage, I did check the manual on Tascam's website before but I have heard basically nothing else about this machine from actual users. Thanks to wifey my studio space is now restricted to a small closet so I have to make the most of the space I have available...I'd probably find myself sleeping rough if she found out I'd bought another piece of gear into the house without having a good reason to own it. Sounds dope though.I'm thinking I'll probably have the SP set up with it in the same way you do, then use the remaining inputs for an MPC or something.

ok sound real cool to me, i just sold the dp01fx for that reason and so now i record via soundcard to pc...
i also downloaded the 2488 I manual, i cannot see tha main differences between that model and the Neo one...i ask that because here in france i can easly find the 2488 I (or II) for 200€ or 300€ instead of 750€ (Neo price, damn)...

I think the 2488 has the 40 gig hard drive and the NEO has 80 gig. I dont think the 2488 has aux sends. I remember running across a few difference in my research but nothing that would make me say screw the older one.
I used to record through a behringer-usb-to logic but it gets old and im an animator so staring at a computer screen for 40 hours a week then going home to do the same was insane. It feels good to have a beasty machine like the MV right next to a beasty 24 track recorder that records quick and has great sound and editing capabilities. If i wasn't so particular about the shit i have been producing id be dropping tracks on the daily but once i get comfortable with these machines and the sound im sort of going for, then ill start posting shit. Im just scatter brained and all over the place so one day id flip a sample then the next im banging on the ipad in ANIMOOG and layering 8 tracks of synths into a un-eq-able mess. Just trying to keep it fun but i have no self confidence in music at all. I just enjoy doing it for me.

cool! Rock on.
AutoCad huh. I remember an old girlfriend of mine was going to school for interior design and she had to use autocad. I saw the interface, id go nuts if i had to stare at that shit all day. I get bored enough staring at FLash and Photoshop and After Effects all day.
Well, it looks like you need that machine, 24 tracks is amazing, especially coming from 8 track machines or 4 tracks on the 808.

the only thing that "don't turn me on" on the 2488 series is that you loose the very practical knobs for tweaking EQ live that were on the DP01 series...

Just got a Tascam Ministudio Porta 02 for free from a friend. Gonna mess around with it, never used a cassette recorder.
