I hear that Wax, but it's just strange that people actually must feel like they can't put together a beat without a sequencer that they would be proud of.

So is this mixtape going to be made without the use of the sequencer now?
I don't know if I'm taking part yet(unless the sequencer is allowed, I have quite a few beats that I can record from my tapes), but I'm still curious how exactly you make beats this way with an SP-404.
Does someone mind explaining?
Thanks to Euclid for bringing the mixtape idea back :)

If this is still going down, i would be up to it, I prefer to do beats live with no sequencer thats how i did my last track hashish if you please, in my opinion i think the 404 is the easiest sampler to use live..

C'mon son!?!?

im still up for it... it's jus an unexpected requirement... i think some guidance is needed since it appears that quite a few of us rely on SEQ's... i do do some freestyle shyt when i jus playing around but nothing ive ever recorded... so dont quit on us...

Aight, but people are acting like it's unworkable. It's the quickest way to make a beat on the sp and that's why arena battles were better when you had one track to extract all your samples from. Juxt could take everybody to school, that dude can make drums out of any noise and some sp effects. I'll post a short video on youtube later today.

Doc - this isn't criticism, so please don't take it as such:

for these mixtapes to work, we need clear vision and instructions from the start. so many attempts have fizzled before due to deadlines that have dragged on and people being unclear as to what equipment/samples/etc they can use

if you want to compile a tape of SP beats using no sequencer - i say go for it! stick to your guns, you've explained very clearly what you mean. set a deadline and encourage cats to contribute

i think the more mixtapes, the better. and it is good to have a theme or unique aspect to each one (such as no sequencer/freestlye beats). but taking on the project requires leadership - to deal with all queries, collate the audio files and then arrange the tracks and create cover artwork.

of course you're more than capable of this, and so are other dudes with other ideas for tapes. probably not good idea for tapes to overlap, so for anyone who doesn't like the no sequencer rule, wait til this tape is done and then begin your own.

peace

i think this is a dope idea. you can definately see peoples natural flow when they come live with the SP.
i played the fuck out of my sp 303, now 2 pads are almost completely dead due to not sequencing and playing live shit raw all the time. it's fun and funny. it works on your rhythm and trains your ear, while stimulating your brain.
take a chance SP heads go out of your element lol
PS try not quantizing drums too,! * you might find swing *

No quantize will definitely be a challenge for me. Not because I make timing errors, but more because I use to mess a lot with different settings afterwards.

I will however try this, its not impossible for sure. It probably won't result in my best beat ever, but its going to be fun nevertheless. 8)

( Also how about this little idea: "SP-FORUMS BEAT TAPE Vol.3: The MicroWave sessions". Its a mouthful though. :p )
