A little off topic, but for how little an MV8000/8800 goes for nowadays if I didn't have one i'd be looking at those too....bulky, but they are amazing sequencers and samplers.

I don't know about anyone else but the more I use my SP the less and less I use my MPC 2KXL. SP is just SOOOO much faster, you can get ideas down so quick, no fucking sequencer, no going through program bullshit just to tweak things. Anyone else feel this way?

Despite all the dissing going on here, this place was actually born from the MPC forums. Just remembered that now. This thread lead to the birth of the SP Forums, it even had some early fam wiegh in (Jonti, pt3r). Thanks Chulukinat!

^very interesting! I still can't quite believe it. So that means I've been around since the beginning. Weird...
Yeah mpc forums is full of jaded dudes. My guess is they were cool the first 50 or so times the same question was asked. Tbh with a good search on that site most anything can be found. However, I sold my mpc 1k a long time ago. Sp and ms-1 are where it's at. Just got an op-1 and it's cool too but no sp!

All these forums full of beat snobs. sp -forum definitely my fav out of all of them. stones throw forum is definitely not living up to the hype. The battles is cool, and many talented cats are entering them.Other than that it's like high school with the cool kids club and normal ppl cant eat at the cool kids table.lol

what questions do you have about mpc's?

I was just asking whether any long term mpc500 users had any issues with build quality. I've heard stories about dodgy build quality and that they don't last long. I'm looking to get one to pair up with the 404 as a live set up and I've heard conflicting opinions over build quality and whether they'll stand the abuse of constant gigging, as I'm going to be playing all drums live off of it (watch out Jel and Jeremy Elliss!).

the MPC 500 is the worst one you could get

Cheers mate! Knew I should've linked that thread the first time I stumbled across it, sucked trying to find it a 2nd time. Couldn't tell you what happened to that site Killbridge site. Think I'll PM Chulukinat & Keesj about it, they're so hands off about this place they may have missed this thread & it's development.

@Strayfield: sorry for the hijack!

I don't know how, why or when Chulukinat (my brother) came up with the idea of SP Forums, but as the linked MPC Forums thread shows he felt there was room for a dedicated SP forum which didn't exist yet.

My brother then turned to me as I've always been creating websites and had set up some forums before. It's not that much work to set up to be honest as we simply installed a free open-source script called phpBB which I then customized to have its own theme, etc. We changed/added subforums over time based on community feedback.

I think my brother promoted the website here and there when it was all set up, but most of the traffic comes via word-or-mouth, i.e. you guys spreading the word. (Thanks :)

The forums started of being called SP Tips 'n' Tricks. We weren't sure it was gonna work out so we didn't invest in a domain name and instead hosted the forums on a domain name I already owned which is a (very) rough and awesomified translation of my, and therefor also my brother's, last names.

At some point we figured out a lot of people really liked the forums, but the URL was hard to remember so we changed the name and bought http://www.sp-forums.com

( We used to forward anyone visiting the old URL to the new one, but apparently that feature broke sometime ago so that's why you see the cryptic error message. )

One interesting side note is that I personally don't have a clue how an SP works and don't do any music production apart from occasionally trying out a new iPad app to play around with. I do appreciate the music though, the creative processes behind it, and the community which keeps me motivated to ensure the server keeps running, etc. Chulukinat is still actively producing music.

Anyway, that's the story I guess. I should mention we've had a lot of help from awesome volunteers/moderators/admins that help run the battles, keep the forum spam-free (as much as possible), etc. I'm not going to try and list everyone, as I bound to forget some old-timers, but I guess you know who they are.

Here's a photo of my brother (left) and I (right) by the way haha:

......To be honest I prefer the 500's pads to the 606's (bigger, better for finger drumming)....

Are you sure?Bigger yes ,but I found the sensitivity was very low for playing on non fixed velocities...But it depends on how hard anyone is used to hit them.
I found the korg's padkontrol the best (softest) but my favorite pads are on akai lpd8...
As far for the mpc500 I was disappointed of no chopping ability...Major flaw, since although the only sp 'chopping' is a 505 (and 606 only auto) the mpc500 lacks the instant resampling...
@strayfield:You should check it since we all have different views! But if you can afford go to the mpc1000 jjos instead.
Portable alternatives are microsampler , or an ipad

100% quote
i remember that i was desperate to play the 500 at the point that i almost decided to use an hammer to play with... :)
like Unfolding said, the pads are great in dimension but sensitivity...is not there...
