I dont know if you guys have heard this, but some blogger posted almost all of the samples that were use in making madvillany. You know the madlib mf doom cult classic. Well to use the words of a one Fly DX "If you dont know you better ask somebody" ha ha... anyway, word on the street is madlib himself asked the guy who ran the blog to take the post down and he did. Here is a post in response to that. Lots of gray area here, like whats wrong with giving credit where credit is due, and having obscure samples so you dont get sued, and also reviving old records... The controversy goes on and on, check it out and let me know what you think! http://hiphopisread.blogspot.com/2008/0 ... n-you.html

I guess he really takes pride in finding rare samples/loops... So give that away and the beats becomes less "madlib"

i think hes just afraid that by playing the original source people will think he didnt do much to it to begin with.

its too bad, he should at least know what he is if thats the case instead of trying to hide it

like when you hear the kanye sample sources

its quite apparent he really didnt make much effort into making it original besides rapping over it

i think this could be a good thing over all, mixing several sample sources takes more skill and should be a standard

i think it's that if industry people get wind of the sources, Stones Throw could get a HUGE bill to pay

yeah ive heard of ppl hiring others to do sample searches online since you can damn google every fn senntence made. id be kinda upset too because hes so lokey (under the mainstream) that he would pay out the ass cuz some blogger exposed all his beats.

@ the end of the day what does it help if we attempt to recycle what he flipped?

unless theres so parts of the beat that are still rockable.

and nowadays ppl get screwed over samples...

He's just afraid of getting sued, probably feeling the economic crisis also... a lawsuit could potentially ruin the sales of the new album.

Makes perfect sense to be worried... then again, getting sample clearance for each and every sample we take would be madness too.

I'm hoping someone big does get sued soon and finds a way to actually win, making things more easy for sample-based musicians.

A bit like that Mouse guy, what's his name again? We definitely need another such revolution when it comes to samples and their clearance.

You know... there are bands playing only covers making lots of money of other people's songs and those are the 'original' versions... ain't nobody cares about all those coverbands... I wonder why, because they really make money directly off that original work.

In the end, I don't really get the fuzz about needing sample clearance anyways. So what someone used your bass sound and chopped the bassline into pieces. So what someone took that hi-hat and added a filter.

It's a tad different when it comes to vocals perhaps, but for instrumentals it's like getting a patent on the use of orange paint for cars or something.. it's just stupid.

That'd be my hunch as well. And PHeMoX, if you're talking about Dangermouse, then it's clear you didn't get Nickelodeon in the early 80s. =P
