A new SP1200 clone has just come out by Puesa/MKSREC...

https://mksrec.com/products/mksrec-1-12 ... um-machine

Joins the Rossum (obviously) and the Isla (which I don't think really counts). A guy called Low Hiss was working on one too but I think that was merely Raspberry Pi-based and I think he settled for just making an app/plug-in in the end. And there is, of course, the £500 Behringer one rumoured to be in production...

I'd probably commit the sin of getting the Behringer one (depending on how the electronics are done - i.e. not if it's all just software emulation) to muck about with and tide me over until I can afford an original one. Hopefully it will bring the prices back down... altho I dunno if having a load of clones makes the originals cheaper because users have other options or makes the OGs more desirable to collectors and therefore more expensive? 808s or 909s never came down afaik, so...

I don't really fancy the Rossum one. 20 seconds would be nice tho. The originals had the capacity to use 20 seconds but because memory chips were so expensive back then, they only put in 10 seconds worth. Such a shame. Altho, since they were originally supposed to just be for single hits (like the MPC60 too), I suppose they thought 10 seconds would do it.

If I had the cash, I might consider the MKS one as the electronics seem to have been done right, largely. But, I dunno. I wouldn't say I'm a purist, lol...but the real thing is the real thing, with all that entails, and the 10 second limit is one of the things that make beats on it magic. I used to have a 90s black one but I always wanted an 80s grey one. They are great machines but 6K takes the piss tho.

Regardless, I'm skint for the foreseeable so its all academic!
