HI guys
i noticed some weird things i would share with you.
It happened that some audio cd-r someone burned me some years ago, 2001 circa, has lost all the tracks...i've tried different pcs or cd reader but nothing to do; when i listen from.some cds of the 80s bought at that time (for example "3ft high an rising" by de la soul) they still work. Last week i talk with someone here who told me that cd-rs or even dvds are not sure as they said 20years ago: after 20/30 years they lost datas...
What do you think about it?
Thanks

I never heard of that and I dig CDs at bargain stores that have unopened disks from 1989 and they still work. Remember when CDs were manufactured in huge boxes :P

I will say that the laser will wear out the CD over time and since CDRs don't have a protective seal like replicas do, they are more prone to wear out fast. But the result is never missing data, kinda like old cassette tape when it sounds foggy and muffled.

It sounds like the index track of our burned CD is bunk. Without the index track, it's not going to work on anything, even if it's really nice looking.

CDR is pretty disposable in terms of format, too. I kinda look at CDR like dubplates are for vinyl.

I've never had one just crap out, but they're definitely easier to fuck up even if you're just trying to clean them.

What's that in details?
Do you guys know a way to recuperate those lost tracks? I remember there were a software called isobuster that done the job...

I've had cd-r wear out. Usually it's due to sun or leaving in bad climates. Back in the day the darker the bottom side of the cd-r the better quality it was. On the CDs I've left on the car dash in the sun, the disc actually becomes transparent and see thru. I've never had this happen on CDs that were professionally burned (studio CDs), only CDRs and DVDRs.

Yeas, i noticed a bit of trasparency too, but the strange thing is that thos cd-rs of mine were most of the time in the house...

What happens when you put the disc in your computer and try to "explore" the contents of the CDROM drive?

Ok i retried it in the pc and it isn't even be seen by it; the cd just stay stocked in the cd reader of the pc...now the we talked about transparency, it looks very trasparent but i dont remember if that was its state in 2001

Cds degrade irrevocably, and at a rapid pace.

That’s why I find the interest for tapes (and vinyl) both “stupid” and sensible. Who can decode your mp3, mp4, mpeg, wmv, swf, wav, au, aiff files year 2030. Maybe nobody is interested  But you might be. And print the digital pictures you want to keep…

http://www.powerdatarecovery.com/

alternatively, it seems isobuster is still around but costs $40:
