It should get an 11 anyhow.
Agree it's kind of late to be reviewing this album. It's been ranted and raved so much that people created a bandwagon to hop on over it.

But I do like how Stones Throw put out the 45s for each track on the Donuts album.
The way Dilla's production can be studied, the individual records allows a concentration on each piece.

Sorry fellas they were onto Donuts from day 1. This review came out 1 day after it was released & 2 days before he passed away:
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/4365-donuts/

Remember they're reviewing the reissue, that means taking in how widely available music is being reinterpreted & presented for a 2nd time. They do aknowledge this in the 3rd paragraph too: "Donuts is best experienced as a self-contained album". Also they dedicate extra space to this reissue review because of the hindsight of the release (the mythology, the samples, the production values etc).

Pitchfork does cop some flack with trend jumping, which is a valid argument in hindsight. But who's to say a sound or scene doesn't follow through when it's young? There's plenty of sounds & movements that never take off but are interesting enough to warrant investigation. But yeah, it would've been cool if they paid more attention to the Russian beats scene after covering it.

But I can see where D is coming from with hating Pitchfork. Nate Patrin's 5.8 was total bullshit. I'd be pissed at that too, it reads like he only assessed the music on the surface level & barely listened to it. Remember there's a difference between a brand (Pitchfork) and a reviewer (Nate Patrin).

*heresy time* Patrin overrated Donuts by giving it a 10. The album isn't perfect, but it works because it's honest. Honesty doesn't mean perfection. Beats fans have given this album so much hype it actually hurts the album. The first time I listened to it I couldn't help thinking "Why isn't this over? Every track sounds like the album's ending" (strangely fitting for a final album). It took about a dozen listens before I could enjoy it from start to finish. Sorry!
