This is a tribute to the big G

explicit.mp3 - 10.16MB

uses a sample of the great man doing his 'impolite words' sequence.

Everything else is SP-related. The FX are RingMod + Tape Delay. The stringy synth is just the built-in one from the 606, all the filtering is the D-Beam... so an interesting track from an SP perspective too.

Thanx man - I love how you can produce so many crazy FX sounds with the 606; it's a technohead's dream

Yeah, the D-beam alone (considering what you can do with it when using FX and so on, resampling the heck out of it) is so powerful.

If there's one thing that I'm missing on my MV, then it's the D-beam. There are plenty of FX inside and I also have a Kaoss Pad 3, but the SP-606 wins when it comes to being able to quickly make all sort of sounds and sound effects indeed. Great machine. 8)

I almost always use a 909 kicker as the base sample. Then reinforce with subsonic and shorten the amplitude envelope (this needs to be done in soundforge/audacity :x ). Finally I just compress until it sits in the track.

At the mixing stage (and I only just learnt this, even though it probably should be obvious), set the kicker to about -10db and turn up the speakers until it sounds big and fat. Then turn the speakers back down and add the rest of the track around the kick. You end up with a quieter mix, but with way better dynamics that sound better when you crank the lot up together with a final bit of compression.

Even though some of these steps I've used the comp for, there's no reason why it couldn't be done on just the SP (I know you don't like the 001010101's) - just apply the same principal of turning up the speakers rather than the sound itself, and building everything around the kick.

The volume of the kick should only be set once, apparantly.. 8)

sick! that first break/drop is really nice. i like the reversed hit you use to flip things forward

that Tape Delay is nice...the 404's got a Tape Echo, similar sound and very useful for dubbing. be great to chain a Ring Mod to it 606-style

how does the 606 work in terms of synth notes? do the 16 pads correspond to piano keys? or do you sample a certain pitch to each pad individually?

i've had a few Carlin samples snipped up ready for dropping into an appropriate track...never thought he'd die before i got a chance to do it :(

@Drewzle - the SP tape delay is the best, imo. I can't make a track without it..

With the synth notes, yes and yes. They corespond to piano keys and it automatically samples the right pitch to the right pad. The thing I like about it is the tuning is right everytime, unlike when you pitch samples and they can get outta shape after a few semitones.

@juxt - I'll post a kick collection for you 2moz! I'll make some more hip-hop style kicks tonight. I'm loving creating kicks at the moment :D
