I'm wondering if it might be a good investment to get some kind of VHS or 8mm camcorder for bouncing single-take tracks, when i record outdoors with the 404. It would be like a little cassette recorder with RCA ins/outs you could also use to store the material before you sample it. Plus it might color the sound or saturate a little with the tape... with a little lcd screen to see your levels. Has anybody tried recording this way?

with the SNES damn. I remember the old genesis had a headphone jack (and fader)

it would be cool to sample from videos, on a picnic table somewhere with a little screen to watch, going to the SP and both of the them are on batteries. then just dump your beat onto another tape.

yo its crazy, there was a whole thread about this i think. its def awesome. but i read on another board that it can throw the timing of stuff off by a little bit liek if you're trying to layer loops you dumped to video tape with other stuff it might be off a little ... it rules for finalizing a track tho

Don't bother. While its cool to sample off old warbly types of vhs tapes, its shit to record onto. You don't get the saturation effect as the audio iis recorded in vertical strips as opposed to horizontally on cassettes and reel-to-reel. You will not get "head bump" or the warmth of traditional tape recording. You will get a high quality recording but not coloration.

This one is supposed to have the best sound quality in the price range:

Probably my next purchase.

....wowww.
what about setting markers, as you would with a mini-disc recorder. i think i need a feature like that.
here in a review it says..

"""Sadly for this writer, the M10's "Divide" function is not available as a free-standing button like it is in the other recorders -- it is now buried in the main menu. What was the Divide button is now a T-Mark button."""

does that mean you hit the t-mark button and it begins right then as a seperate track you can jump to quickly?

Not sure, but one cool thing it has is a 5 second record buffer, meaning when you hit record, it saves the previous 5 seconds of audio, in case you missed the beginning of a sound you wanted. REALLY feature cool for field recording.

I have the zoom h2... 75 bones on ebay, and seriously, the shit that thing can record, at dope quality, amazes the hell out of me on a regular basis... and with no external mics.

The newer models must be insane if they're even better.

i use a tascam dp004 for portable recording. runs on batteries and also has a decent built in mics. goes for cheap nowadays....probably less than a hundred bucks used.

The Zoom H2 looks dope! I still record on a portable MiniDisc-Recorder, but I hate recording everything again into the computer. So this one looks like a nice solution!

^ i have a minidisc, the last model they made, the RH1... if you're on a pc, it can import audio to wav straight from the disc without rerecording. Shamefully there is no software for mac that does the same, or at least not for the latest OS X...

but the RH1 is a great recorder as well, with a good mic.

Yeah, thank you. The RH1 is a nice machine! But unfortunately I don´t have a Hi-MD Recorder...only an oldschool MD. :(
