whenever i put ANY compression on stuff sampled through the internal mic, i get crazy noise that almost overcrowds the original sound... is this normal? basically the compression is useless on this... and without compression it's too quiet to use in a beat.

i get just crazy levels of crackle that i start to wonder if my machine is okay/normal.
fyi, i'm on a 404 SX.

Isn't that just a by-product of the noise floor on the external mic? I mean, that external mic is really, really shitty to my ears...so every bit of ambient noise around the source being recorded adds to the noise floor, and when compressed, it makes sense that it would suck ass beyond belief...no?

What is the source you are recording? Maybe I can try it out on mine and see if I get the same shit...

yeah probably makes sense... i was trying to sample shaking a pepper grinder. I can upload the wavs compressed and uncompressed later on for comparison. I thought it should be possible to do at least some compression on it to boost it just a little bit.

Yeah, if you have a directional mic, like an SM57, you might get better results, but you'd have to have a mic stand, and maybe up the gain since a pepper grinder isn't really that loud.

I can imagine that the on board mic picked up tons of room noise on that one!

maybe try recording it again inside a well filled closet full of clothes!
