I've been sampling a lot of new Indie Rock type stuff. Techno, new Jazz and soul. Anybody have a problem with this. I always said I would only sample pre 80's stuff. I'll sample anything now, just as long as I flip it hard enough to where you can barely tell what it is. If somebody finds out, maybe you will get some fans of the music digging your interpretation. Anyways......rules rules rules, do you have a date you won't sample past?

As long as it's not painfully obvious i'll sample anything.

I'll sample anything if I think it sounds dope. I simply don't have that much "old" music that I could rely on so I have to go that way. Then again, what's the point in limiting yourself in that way? To me it only depends on the sounds not where they come from.
You can still call it a remix if it's too obvious 8)

Hahah, I've been sampling Royksopp and Coldplay and I bet you won't ever know in which beats they are in. I agree, if it sounds interesting enough to sample, I won't stop just because a record is from 2009 and not 1887.. ;)

Oh, which reminds me. The best piano keys patch I've ever sampled, came from a classical record with some crazy experimental new wave kind of music.

ive been doing this too
especially minimal techno, dubstep, and epic style bands like sigur ros. nabbed some amazing drums from LCD Soundsystem...
no need to fiddle with synths anymore, just steal oneshot synth sounds since they are usually right up in the front of most brostep  songs nowadays. it speeds up the "A.D.D" style synth riffs

since i usually mess things up beyond recognition it makes more sense to sample this way, rather than if i was solely loop diggin'

Artist's gotta be dead. I don't go by this rule, though.

Yeah. We're already jacking everybody's sounds, we're pretty much breaking all the "rules" by default. No need to make up new ones.

I'd say the only thing you should try to stick to is sampling music you love. Don't just dig and sample for their own sake. Sampling is kind of like DJing, no reason to be ashamed of your sources. If you really love the music, then you won't have to ask yourself or anyone else about "rules".
