im trying to act like its not my speakers since im using some punk ass logitech speakers with the big ass woofer. but im sampling breaks, choppin out my kicks then hitting it up with the isolator and filtering it but it sounds like its too wide. like a old man who smokes too many cigarrettes trying to beatbox. i was wondering if anyone had any other ways they resample them kicks, i even tried hitting it up with the chorus and then eqing it but im not really getting any clean results.
???

I make my drum samples by layering.

For the kick I will take two of the same
1. Use a lowpass with a bit of res for the low end
2. pitch up the same kick higher and then use a high pass to cut out the mud.
2.5 It works good if you resample them off beat just a little bit. (this gives more of a realistic effect and not as much "thump" so you don't clip as easily)
3. Resample the two together.
4. Profit !

i think he means resample them slightly off like by fractions of seconds so its a bigger (wider) peak rather than a taller skinnier peak, yeah??

btw on philly craigslist someone is selling a 380 piece drum sample pack for 100 dollars, an extra 75 gets it delivered to your studio! hahaha

I think I might know what your problem is.
You probably hit REC plus RESAMPLE, then immediately try to hit both pads at once.
First hit one pad, then both pads at the same time, then use the MARK to set the start point where the "double" kick starts.

springwater you got the loop capture so just layer sounds in there

plus you can use the subsonic effect to get an envelope effect by turning the threshold all the way up so no sub is heard, then twist the third knob from one side of the other

one side is the original sound and the other is silence...

couple that with the loop capture and the quick erase function (effect assign + rec) and you can rapidly try again and again to get the right twist of the knob to make it snappy

otherwise

get some good samples to start with! i always have good snares ready to layer on top of breaks so it can make it punchier.

also you may not want to chop such small pieces, its good to have longer slices (kick hihat hihat etc) to make it more groovey and what not

This might not help you specifically, but I figured I'd put this here as I recently started doing it with all my drums:

When I sample kicks, snares, and breaks off of records I always sample them at 45RPM, and then pitch them back down to where they should be. It's common knowledge that back in the day, like the 80s through the late 90s, that they used to sample nearly everything at 45RPM or faster, then pitch it back down in the sampler afterwards to save sample time... My favorite beats of all time all came out in like '88-'94 so I was thinking about that style of production and how to try and achieve similiar results. I realized that pitching kicks and snares up like that on the turntable, then pitching them back down after sampling them fundamentally changes the sonic character of the hits. I'm not up on my technical terms for it at all, but it seems to me like you lose some of the high end in the samples, kicks especially, and it makes drums real punchy, and helps them fit in the beat better. It makes sense, when you think of what a short (faster) waveform of a kick drum would like them, then if you pitch that down it gets a little wider, but you still have the same amount of data there... I primarily work with rappers, and I find that doing this on snares helps leave space for the vocals to fit nicely as well...

I've done a number of tests in my beats using kicks sampled at 33, then switched it out for the same exact kick sampled at 45RPM and pitched down, and the 45 RPM kick sounds better almost every time.

You still need to take time and EQ/filter/layer your kicks, but if you sample off records it's worth a try for sure.

The thing that really sucks about this method is due to the fact that the 404 is horrible at pitching, I have to sample my kicks into another sampler, pitch them down, then sample them into the 404 to use the isolater and vinyl sim etc... It's worth it though.

this is a tip ive been hearing a whole lot, good samples. and layering!!!
i think im getting there, i used to layer everything in fruity so now im just making that transition as well.

i was watching a video of damu the fudgemunk and he samples at 45 then pitches down. i think i might have to try that. sound like a good sonic experiment.

@Dr Tad Winslow

the technical term is "Aliasing" :D

the real signature effect of the sp-1200 beats after the 12 bit.

@Dr Tad Winslow; neat trick. Definitely seems to produce some sick and quite fresh sounds too.

Yeah, the pitch-trick is really awesome and is often used with the SP-1200...I use my Yamaha VSS-100 with an 8 Seconds 8Bit Sampler for that but I haven´t used it on drums yet.
So when I sampled different Kicks and Snares into my SP-404 and I want to layer them: Do I have to hit both pads simultaneously or is there a possibility to link the pads like "When I hit Pad 3, play Pad 4 also"??

Just a little tip.. if you run a non-balanced system with a sub.. whatever your sub is set at.. you should probably halve it

Mine is still too high i think, but turning it drastically down made it so much easier to mix - even though it feels like there's not enough bass. If you make the sub do all the work your actual track will have shit all bass.
