I was just wondering what other people use for a live set up along with their SP of choice.

I don't perform live yet because I only use the 404 to write songs, and after several songs I have to clear the card to gain space. I was thinking about getting a 404sx so I could save the samples on a computer, and then play them back with an akai mpc(d?) controller. Also get a mini kp....
Better start saving.

I use 3 sp303's and a cheap DJ mixer. 2 303's for tracks and effects and 3rd for master effects and mic input.

Damn three 303s together, that sounds wonderful. I'd really like to see a vid of em in action if you ever make any

guys, now i got a concrete question:
how do you think is better to organize a live set up? i mean, in what way do you re-build your beats if, fot examples, they're built in different machines (drum machines, synths, groovebox, sampers etc)?
thanx

a 404. an SH-32 (synth). a RC20xl (looper). guitar. voice.

to ella's Q - i use the 404 sometimes with a full sequenced beat, sometimes a couple of loops, sometimes with just some one-shots.

in the set-up i have used i try to have the complete beat being played by all the boxes together. dif songs use the boxes in dif ways (sometimes the main drum loop w/ be played off the looper, and i'll trigger stuff off the 404 live, sometimes the opposite, etc). so that gives some variety, and new results.

i usually just use my 404 with the kaossilator and use the efx (24 mainly) on the 404. works fine for now...

at the moment all I'm using is an M-Base01, SP-404, DSI Tetra, mixer + delay & reverb..

I've cut way way way back.. not sure where I'll take it from here.. maybe a step sequencer. pretty happy how it is at the moment but its more a producing setup than live.

if done 2 live shows and so far, i've used an Akai MPD32 Controller with Ableton Live and the Laptop was running through my 404SX for effects, its pretty much all you need, u can actually do a entire set on just the 404's if you'd like!!!!!

@fauna or anyone who uses loopers in their setup:

Do you loop the SP together with the instruments or do you play patterns on the SP and loop your guitar and stuff to that? In the second case, how do you cope with synchronizing all that? I find it extremely difficult not to get out of synch after a couple of measures.

But as I type this I guess it would suffice to play a pattern, bring it into the loop and then you wouldn't need to have it running from the SP anymore and can use it to have another pattern ready to do some switch ups (I only own the RC2 looper).

Just thinking out loud :P

I've done a few live shows with my MPC alone and it has kind of sucked. I got an SP404 recently to help out with that (though it's seeing application in the studio too). Mostly using it for transitions (sample 4 bars of MPC beat, play back and tweak effects while bringing in next MPC beat) and the effects. I hate carrying around too much gear for shows so this is just about perfect for me. Fairly new to SP but if I start making beats exclusively on it then I could see rocking a two SPs and a dj mixer setup.

Hey Blindfold - I loop over top of stuff playing from the 404. My timing is pretty damned good, so it usually takes a while to drift. But honestly, I just let it drift. Usually I will use that to work out the arrangement (ie: if I know the looper and 404 will be out of sync after 16 bars, I put a break in there, play something else, then re-trigger things to sync them again).

I hope that helps. I find it a pretty organic experience, and you have to live with fings being messy.
