I'm trying to go completely computerless this go around...and as a lot of vets up here know,i'm without a clue on the tech. aspect of this shit....i wanna record my vocals directly into the sp with beat on headphones from a cd deck...with all of the sp's effects-i'm pretty sure i can get a good sound with the $300 plus mic i got and a cheap preamp with phantom power...actually i think the phantom power is the most important thing,i wouldnt care if i used something in the $50-100 range. any suggestions?would any pre with pp and midi out work?help me out,thanks....dru

I'd say if you want good quality to buy a "tube mic preamp" they can be had for about $100. If you want to go cheap buy like a behringer 8 channel mixer w/phantom power for $50.

The vocals on my whole last album mostly all went through the Sp303. Take a listen if you want, the link is in my sig.

In many cases you will have RCA Line outputs and 1/4" outputs, like on the ART StudioV3 tube pre-amp. That one is cheap and still has great quality.

You'll only get midi outs or ins when the pre-amp has effects that can be synced with other gear, but I wouldn't worry about that.

I'd say there's no point buying a cheap preamp - the SP already has a cheap mic pre built into it!

True, if your going for clean the SP isnt going to do that for you though. Pre Amps on most audio interfaces these days are clean and quiet they just lack mojo. Not sure why the OP wants to go computerless, but a cheap ass laptop and a firewire 410 and your pretty much set.

I used a Studio Projects VTB-1 when I recorded rap vocals. It's a great preamp for its price (it cost me 110€), and makes a great improvement if you change the valve. If your mic is over $300, I highly recommend either this one or something better (like a Goldmike 9844). Otherwise you won't make the most out of the mic.

bridge--personally,i just dont like using computers, and i think it would be ill to do everything in the sp.....someone asked why would i need a preamp--you cant run a phantom powered mic directly into the sp....i appreciate all the input--i have a fiance now, and 3 soon to be step daughters to raise, which is of course a huge reason i cant spend too much doe-plus we're moving to seattle soon.i'm also not concerned with the vocals on this next short ep-lp ,whatever-it-is being pristine--i'm happy if it sounds like a joe budden mix tape or some shit.....i'm probably gonna just go with one of the ever-dreaded bherringer mixers with pp & rca outs-(one of the more "pricey ones",lol)--but for real, with the high quality mic and compression,eq,reverb, delay, isolators in the sp-i dont see how the vocals could end up sounding too shitty--& after they're recorded i'll have someone do a little mastering on them, possibly.i'll trade up for a tube joint in another few months or so.i'm just mad hungry to record again, might just do this mix tape style, but over classic/obscure early-mid nineties beats.......8-11 joints or so,whatever, just wanna have some fun--i got a huge list of fuck you's for industry cats and fake "revolutionaries" i cant wait to get into:)good looking again for the help and the links,i appreciate it a lot.....11
