i only know how to side chain in ableton so try to translate it if you use cubase or whatever

if you dont know what sidechaining is here is a video

(http://downloads.ableton.com/movies/com ... aining.mov)

i think i may have read someone mention it but

have you ever sidechained your kicks via pattern sequencer midi?
after building the patterns to turn down the volume on the kicks when you record. then in a drum rack or impulse have your input to the sidechain compressor, which is on the rest of the track, be the midi input coming to a kick on your second midi only track.

i also read this is something like what madlib's engineer does for the pumping sound except i think he just manually places the kicks one by one

do you know this works with ableton live 6? i found 2 compressor fx, one with the sidechain parameter set to EQ.
maybe we can do it without this ableton fx.

im doing it in live 7 but im not sure if its in live 6. when you click sidechain you have to select the input of the drum that is affecting the signal you are compressing.
you can do the same thing in fruityloops with the peak controller, and im pretty sure some compressor pedals have the ability.

yeah and with the volume down on that kick and sidechain enabled it created like a vacume effect on that channel 8)

also try having the compressor on the send channel and turn up the corresponding knob on each channel you want vacuumed except the drum track. then go to each of those channels and select "sends only" instead of "master" in the output tab.

some serious mixing can be done that way.

same principle should apply, you need one thing being affected (the song w/o the kick) then the sidechain (the kick on separate channel). what program are you trying this in?

maybe check this video i found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKgDwU0d9_0

your compressor im guessing wants left+right inputs for the input and sidechain functions

so take your recorded track for you sp in one track
and pan it to the left, then in the output section of the track click "sends only"

put the compressor on a return channel A or something, then turn up the send on the track with your song. so now the audio is now running through one track and into another track where the compressor is ONLY on the left side.

then make another track with either recorded midi data from your pattern sequencer (if you recorded the audio and midi at the same time)
or a new impulse track with the same kick recorded over the track you first recorded following the kicks the best you can.
then pan the impulse channel to the right and turn up the send knob a. set the output to sends only

if you have ever used a vocoder its basically the same setup process. it sounds complicated but its not, and the results are well worth it
