aight so i read the comments on my beat and have been lookin for some hi hats but i can't really seem to find anything usable. seems like there's always somethin else in the background that makes it sound fucked up when i try to chop it up. i figure i'm doin somethin wrong since i got that fat folder of drum samples axiom gates put up and figure i should have been able to get something outta that.

edit: maybe i should have put this in the 303 tips and tricks? i dunno thats what i'm workin with though

usually u can find a hihat after a kick - between the first kick and first snare is probably a common place to look..

if there's lots of kick still underneath it at that point, you can hipass filter or use the isolator to remove the lows (this is why i look after kicks, rather than after other sounds that have more freqs in common with the hihat)

Hi-hats in hip-hop beats commonly cover a whole(or almost) bar in 16th or 8th notes. Try to start doing that in your beats, then when you get a better feeling try to get creative.

And of course you don't have to limit yourself to only one hi-hat per beat. I usually resample a hi-hat and EQ it to give the track a little more flavor.

I love hi-hats, man, I don't think I've even made a beat without any, yet.

hi-pass
- as you turn the cutoff up on a hipass filter, it cuts out from low->hi instead of a lowpass filter (most common) which cuts out higher frequencies and sweeps down into low frequencies..

so if you have a hihat sample, but there is bassline or kick in the sample too, and you run it thru a hipass filter, you can cut out all the low frequencies from the bass/kick leaving the hihat mostly intact.
