How do yall do when you make a beat on your 303/404, from start to finish? I'm waiting for my 303 and i just want to know the workflow when you make a beat.

I've read that the sequencer sucks, so do you transfer certain parts to your computer and then put together the beat or is it 303 all the way?

Here is my routine

Turn on sp404
Take samples
Chop samples
Sequence chops in different patterns
Experiment on variatons in the patterns
Figure out what patterns make it in the beat
Record beat.
Turn of sp404

I am pretty sure the same thing can be done on the 303 except for the lower polyphony and the less advanced pattern playback.
And no I don't think the sequencer sucks, it's no mpc but it is still very workable, it just takes practice. Most of the people talking shit about the sp-303/404 have never used one or sold it after 2 days because they did not become Madlib overnight.

Thats an answer i wanted to hear! I want to stay away from the computer as much as possible, and it would be great if i could make beats from start to finish on the 303. I've thought about the lower polyphony too, but don't think it's gonna be a problem. I can play 8 sounds at the same time, right? That should be enough.

Good luck and make sure to post your beats.

congrats.. you will enjoy it.

I either record and chop and drum break or use on ive already mangled then I setup a 4 bar drum sequence. Then I hit the stacks of wax and start searching for those sweet loops. Then I record a few, throw the SP in my bag and go hit a cofee shop or something and start to proccess and time stretch as needed and then chop up the samples to my liking. Then I sequence it all in the pattern sequencer and recored it into the computer and post it online.

FamicoM: lol love it! that's my modus operandi too. even if you never finished a track the 404 would still be a required purchase as a toy for altered states. reminds me of that album, "taking drugs to make music to take drugs to". =)
