Hey there,

So I've had my 404 for about a year now, and one of the things I've noticed about it is that the Quantize function is not very accurate. I know how to use it, and I know I'm doing it right, but I've just always thought that my machine is a little sloppy when it comes to timing. I'm also a drummer, so maybe I pick up on this kind of thing more.

However, is it possible that it's just my machine? Has anyone else noticed this issue as well (especially when syncing to a workstation like Cubase LE)?

I was going to get the software update, but the update is to version 1.04, and mine is already on 1.05. Would doing this help at all? Or is there like a system reset or something that might solve this problem?

Any suggestions would be fantastic....

If your a drummer with good timing why would you bother using quantize at all?
I think the 404 and 303 quantize are fine, maybe your samples are chopped sloppy.

very good observation, i've definitely done that and didn't realize it at all, just like 3 millisecond can make a difference

To answer your question, because the pads are not responsive enough...My Zoom MicroTrak was $100 and it has better play than my 404! That's why I need this Quantize to work right...

I hear ya, zoom makes some nice pads on their machines. The 303 pads are more responsive, kinda like the sub pad on the 404. Like I said, if a sample is chopped poorly it will not sequence right on beat for obvious reasons and if the sound is chopped as tightly as possible without losing the feel of the sound then it will sit right on the quantize note and be on time. You can also sample "air" in front of a hi hat and then mark it to be very tight in time, sequence it and then adjust the start/end/level knob while it's playing to get some swing.
