ey man, some things are a bit different with mac OS. . let me try and explain.

the input will only be passed through to the output while a program is set to 'monitor' the input and pass it through to the output. it is an application's job to route audio in mac OS... whereas in windows its kind of half done by windows and half done by the programs. .so in windows when you plug something to the input, you can automatically hear it coming out if your sound settings are right.

The way mac OS does it makes it easier to do some things to do with routing audio between apps, listening in on other app's audio, etc.. so it might not be as immediate, but its for the best in the long run. Also it lets different apps handle things in the way they want to.

For example: in ableton live, you create an audio track, tell it to monitor incoming audio signals so it passes them through to the output as well as does what it needs with them.

audacity is kinda crap. there miiiight be an option somewhere to monitor the channel though - which should pass the audio through. this should be under the track settings or the global preferences or something.

I would suggest using garageband. Considering how free it is, It's a really decent bit of kit to be honest. you can load AU plugins in it and do quite a bit.

creat a new 'real instrument' track
in the track info settings, just select monitor: 'on'. done. (make sure the prefs are set to take input from the actual input and not the microphone)

basically just imagine that mac OS is providing apps with a place to plug into the input and output.

if an application plugs into the input, and plugs into the output, but doesnt run a line from one to the other.. it can still record, and it can still make sound.. but youre not going to get the input going directly to the output right when u play it.

Make sure you have the line going into the audio input and not the headphone jack which is a common mistake. The input has a symbol of two triangles facing each other and a circle in between.
