Ok

I've got a 505 and a microkorg and am intrigued by what I need to buy next to get the most out of the set up. IE: move closer to making actual tracks

Computers are out.

What 2/3 machines work best together for you?

Have considered (in no particular order)
1. A better sampler
2. A rack sampler
3. MVs
4. MPC2000XL and up
5. Everything else

Having already got an SP, what would complement it?

My music is essentially beat based, though tempo/style can vary.

Thanks!

You have a sampler with pitching, you have a keyboard to lay down basses & leads- I'd look into a small digital multi-tracker & start laying sh!t down.

A multitrack recorder is definately a great idea. You may also consider some decent monitor speakers and/or headphones. One can never have too many effect units either.

Gracias!

I still want a better sampler to play with :D !
But this has crystalised the way forward. And i've got an effects unit, mixer and turntables already.

Should really tie the room together.

Cheers

Define better, people can give you more examples of a 'better' sampler if you say what you're wanting.

Id go with the multitrack b4 u get another sampler. Even if u get an MPC you still need something to record to.

More sage advice... thanks

'Better' sampler?

I often wonder about sequencing and the MPCs. Used to mess with a MC303 and quite liked its sequencing. I'm here with a 505 and a different workflow and I see potential in combining but can't crystalise my aim.

It's all fun and hard but I guess we all want to remove the limits to what we can create and i'm stood on the bottom rung looking up.

Anyone want to give a shout to a multi-track recorder that's done the business for them?

Cheers

wow man i did not know this:............"The process was conceived and developed by guitarist Les Paul in the 1940s with the financial and inspirational assistance of Bing Crosby and the Ampex Corporation, resulting in the first 8-track machine which used 1-inch tape. Through the 1950s, many popular recordings, notably those of Les Paul and Mary Ford and Patti Page used the technology to enhance vocals and instrumentals. From these pioneering beginnings, it evolved in subsequent decades into a mainstream recording technique."

I never heard that history, interesting...

To answer the question, what hXc and others said, a recorder. I use an analog 4-track Portastudio, but a digital box would probably be easier to learn. If you have a direct drive turntable and a scratch needle/cartridge you should be good to go for basics. From there it depends on personal taste. For instance I'd love a room full of actual, real world percussion (tabla, steel drums, djembe, drum kit) and a Rhodes with cabinet, but that's just me.

ps: and trees. can't forget the trees...
pps: and vinyl
pps: Maybe you don't really *need* a strong tt and needle, but why wouldn't you? :D
