what is this type of effect called where nothing is really 'sharp?' it sounds as if its been bounced to cassette a few times and i've experimented with my deck but everything still sounds a bit too hard. im trying to keep it all cassette tape and sp only

To me it sound like the drums have a really tight room reverb on them, like a slightly slow attack time and really short decay. My guess anyhow.

Monte Booker uses this quite often, with reverbs on drums:

1. Make a beat
2. Play it over your speakers
3. Record it with a cell phone from 2012, about 8 feet away
4. Repost to soundcloud
5. Fuck it, record it again and repeat

play around with your EQing or try a new tape deck! the beautiful thing about analog mediums is that no two machines are exactly alike! i have way more tape decks than i should, and they all have their own unique sonic signature
i mean, just listen to this garbage https://soundcloud.com/zendanisdead/god ... WAw7yK4W9K

finally figured it out

i pitched a drum loop up 1 using mfx 20 then resampled back down 1 again so the drums are at their original pitch, but played with it so there arnt any artifacts. afterwards i put mfx23 on the drum loop so the bass only hits when the kick hits.

thanks for the replies guys they gave me a chuckle

using mfx 12 (comp) stacked on top of some Hi pass eq, do so by resampling the beat into a new pad, record a new filter each time.

this is one of my favorite things to do
glad you're getting more comfortable with developing your sound on your machine
