Im using Logic Pro im fairly new to it but it is a very comprehensive program.
One could also look at getting Cubase and Reason 4 for Mac but I never used them on a mac book, only on windows.

It's a pretty broad question... Basically, anything that will let you save a wav or aiff file can be used. Your macbook will come with GarageBand, that contains loops. It will also let you save music that you'll create (whether complex stuff or loops).

You can use a freeware like audacity to edit mp3 files from your iTunes library and make samples.

And of course, there's all the music software catalog. I use Logic but there are plenty of other softwares available.

Hope this helps,
Laurent

Logic Studio/Pro would be a very very handy recording system to own for creating loops, and converting samples to .aiff/.wav at the perfect length & bpm...not to mention it is an amazing sequencer, and recording software. It would be super helpful if you're attempting to supplement the abilities of an SP sampler with the production of a good DAW.

Reason 4 would also be a really good idea. Logic Pro has some really great features, but all of it's synth modules are pretty cheesetastic. Reason 4, while still having some cheese, also has some really good sounding synth modules.

Macbook's will run anything relatively well. I'm not really adversed in Ableton, or Protools, etc. etc.

But those are the two I would suggest as obvious choices. Logic Pro's audio file editing/converting abilities are just really perfect for touching up samples to later be loaded into your SP.

the macbook pro has line in, and spdif in which is a way dope feature I didn't know about, but honestly I would look at getting one of these...it's perfect for a 303 or 404 and is a Mac exclusive....apogee duet, I'm about to get one

Logics sick. Ableton 7 is also pretty cool for beatmaking on a computer

no dude! get audacity if you want something free, logic express is 199, this is a program that used to cost a grand, now for 200 bones...apple did some cool shit with making this program cheap enough for the masses so respect them and support the software developers so they can keep upgrading it and making it better....

As far as making beats on a mac, I like the reason / live combo, but for the bread it's hard to argue against Logic Express. Deta!L's on point... that ish used to be way price prohibitive, but now they're offering the same tech for much cheaper.

Quicktime pro and Sound Studio are also good for the lighter file conversion and wav/aif editing stuff.

Reason homie...

Live / Logic / and ProTools are all in the same vein. If you have one I think you're good.
