Looking to spice up beats.
Want something to add that low end bass.
Need to stay under $300.

Looked at:

Microbrute/Minibrute
Novation Bass Station
Possibly a cheap, used bass guitar and amp

Can anyone recommend any other bass suggestions?

A synth is your best option, low learning curve. I make songs with my minibrute and I have no idea what im doing.
Youre not going to be able to do that with a bass.

The Moog Minituar!!!

It's specifically a bass synth with a simple interface. You can DL a plugin that can access more parameters but I haven't bothered with it.

You should be able to find a used on for around 300

Just picked up a Volca Kick and it seems to work great as a bass machine. Very deep siney basses to hard distorted basses.

Consider the Volca FM. You can get loads of DX7 patches if you can get it in your unit with your DAW & sysex patch thing. (I haven't tried using it, but I've seen YouTube vids showing it can be done). I prefer Volca FM over Bass/Keys, because you can mess around & find 32 different operators to change the sounds. Needless to say, you could get tons of bass sounds in this unit!

I'm saving up for a bass station at the moment. Seems like a good option considering I can pick one up for about £200 second hand here.

I have to recommend Korg monotribe if you going cheap but want expensive sounding low end bass. I'd look into the new Korg Monolouge too, that looks like an advanced monotribe with keyboard and better build.

I took the thin strings off an acoustic guitar I bought for $30 and record into the same mics I use for my albums. I use my SP-606 to fatten and smooth them out. You heard a few tracks

Sampling riffs from a electric guitar and lowering down the pitch on the 202 and so forth.
