what up everyone, first post on sp-forums. i was looking to get an mpc2000xl but decided the sp-303 would give me the sound i was looking for because i found the sound i was looking for on these forums. :) the user Mr.Thiel has a nice grime sound to all his beats and i was wondering how you would get that. Im pretty sure you need a cassette recorder but do you make the beat and then put it on cassette? anyones help is much appreciated and thanks to Mr.Thiel for the inspiration.

heres jupiter twos myspace page if you havent heard his beats.

You'll have to ask Keesj to change your name. I don't know how Mr.Thiel gets that fat sound either. He's got the the skills to pay the bills though.

Well, for most hip hop the tape/Lo-fi sound is usually a product of not being able to afford more advanced recording gear. Nowadays you can use freeware to multi-track on a computer so there's a split between producers who like the ultra clean low sound floor of 24bit 192khz recording, while others still like that oldschool vibe. I've used tape recorders just because they are so simple and mechanical you have to establish how to place sounds on beat without a machine quantizing it like pro tools or ableton.

Well on the side of the macbook there is an audio in jack. It looks just like a heaphone jack but the sybol above it is different. Next download Audacity freeware and install it. After you record your beat on the tape recorder just run a cable from the tape recorder headphone jack or rca outs into the audio jack on your laptop. Now just hit record in Audacity and press play on your tape. Now you have it digitally tracked into the computer and you can record on othe tracks and layer it up or just export that like it is to an .mp3. I hope that helps.
